Wrathful God Character in Rolara | World Anvil

Wrathful God

The realm of Rolara is steeped in the myth and mystery of forgotten gods and lost artifacts. At the core of its mysticism lies the elusive legend of the Wrathful God, whose very name has been wiped from the annals of history, and the Masque associated with him.   The Wrathful God, veiled in obscurity, is an entity barely spoken of even among the gods of Rolara. Save for the eldest of the Elves and the Archfey, his existence is but a whisper in the wind, a shadowy specter lost to the eons. What remains of his memory is imbued in the mythical Masque, a relic that has spawned countless stories throughout the ages.   One such tale speaks of the Elvish Goddess Mythannara, the embodiment of the Weave and Nature, bestowing the Masque upon a chosen few, the druids whose sacred task was the eradication of abhorrent aberrations. The Masque, in this rendition, is not just a mask, but a divine weapon, a tool of restoration, balance, and the divine wrath of the gods.   Another legend traces the Masque back to the Elvish God of War, Arturian. The tale narrates how Arturian, in his wisdom and valor, left the Masque as a helm in a sacred place. To those courageous and virtuous enough to find it, the Masque would provide an invaluable aid in their battles, serving as both a beacon of hope and a manifestation of the divine mandate.   In Rolara, divine intervention is a rarity; the gods act through the edifices of the temples and the intricate weavings of divine spells. They do not tread the soil of the mortal plane but interact through their chosen oracles, priests, and artifacts. This makes the appearance of the Masque, believed to be the direct intervention of a deity, an event of immense importance, a clear indication of a god's will enacted.   However, divine intervention also brings with it divine wrath. The Wrathful God, through the Masque, unleashes his fury on the mortal world. This wrath is neither capricious nor unjust; it's a reaction, a cosmic response to abominations that threaten the natural and divine order.   The impact of the Masque on those who encounter it is profound. Those chosen or those who stumble upon it are never the same. The Masque, a conduit of divine power, reshapes their destiny, often thrusting them into events that become legends in their own right.   The true origins of the Wrathful God and his Masque, however, remain an enigma. The few who know, the oldest of the Elves and the divine pantheon, guard this secret zealously. But every legend, every tale spun around the Masque, hints at this forgotten God's wrathful legacy, etching his shadow into the tapestry of Rolara's rich and fascinating lore.

Divine Domains

In the mystical realm of Rolara, a cleric or a paladin's divine powers are not merely a product of faith, but are derived from a mutual pact between the mortal and their chosen deity. The deity bestows their blessings, while the mortal, in turn, upholds their god's tenets and spreads their influence across the land. This communion forms the bedrock of a cleric's or a paladin's divine abilities.   However, the Wrathful God exists outside of this established order. Veiled in enigma, this deity neither demands reverence nor seeks disciples among mortals. The eldest of the Elves and the divine pantheon remember him not as a deity to be worshipped, but as a force of nature, raw and elemental. His is the embodiment of wrath, the swift and terrible justice meted out against the abhorrent aberrations that defy the natural and divine order. He does not grant spells or blessings as other deities do; his intervention is unique and primal, manifesting through the Masque.   Moreover, the Wrathful God has no temples, no holy scriptures, no established dogmas or rituals that a cleric or paladin could follow. The relics and rituals associated with him are scattered and shrouded in mystery. His existence is one of action and consequence rather than worship and servitude. There's no tangible concept of morality tied to him, no known doctrine of good or evil, law or chaos that would form the cornerstone of a cleric's or paladin's oath.   Additionally, the unpredictable nature of the Wrathful God's divine intervention makes it difficult for any mortal to form a consistent, lasting connection with him. The Masque, believed to be the primary conduit of his power, appears and disappears in accordance with its own inscrutable logic or the will of the gods, making it impossible for a mortal to form a stable pact.   Thus, clerics, paladins, and other divinely empowered beings cannot draw their power from the Wrathful God in the same manner they do from other deities. The Wrathful God is a force of divine retribution, and his presence in the world is less about granting power to mortals and more about directly enacting divine wrath when the natural and divine order is threatened.
