Sultans' Shadows

The name "Sultans' Shadows" for the jungles north of Al-Zaluma is steeped in a foundational myth that dates back to an era before the city came under the rule of the zealous Caliphate dedicated to Alessandra, the Sun Goddess.   According to the myth, long before Al-Zaluma embraced the worship of Alessandra, it was a city of many Sultans, each ruling over their own domain within and around the city. These Sultans were known for their wisdom, wealth, and the shadowy intrigues that played out in their courts. The jungles to the north were an extension of their realm, a place of mystery and intrigue where the Sultans would conduct secret meetings, diplomatic exchanges, and covert operations away from prying eyes.   As the story goes, these Sultans had a unique connection to the jungle, believing it to be a sacred guardian of their power and secrets. They claimed that the shadows of the jungle were cast by their own legacy, protecting the city from external threats and internal turmoil. The dense canopy and whispering winds of the jungle were said to carry the whispers of past Sultans, offering guidance and protection to those who ventured within.   When the Caliphate dedicated to Alessandra took over, the Sultans faded into history, but their legends remained, deeply ingrained in the cultural memory of Al-Zaluma. The jungles, once a symbol of regal authority and clandestine affairs, came to be known as "Sultans' Shadows," a lasting tribute to the bygone era of the Sultans and their unseen influence that, according to legend, still lingers in the twisting paths and rustling leaves of the mysterious jungle.
