Allgemeines

Also known more simply as Teardrop Island, the Licensed Quarter is geographically the smallest of all the city’s districts, being confined to a single island in the middle of the River of Gold. This makes it unique compared to all other Rokugani cities, since it means the licensed district is physically separate from the rest of the city. In fact, some scholars believe the term “floating world” (for the world of the geisha) may have originated with Teardrop Island. Originally, all of Ryoko Owari’s licensed entertainments are located in the Fishermen’s Quarter. However, as the city grows the demand outstrips that district’s space, while successive Shosuro governors become increasingly concerned over their inability to properly regulate and control the city’s geisha houses, resulting in an embarrassment to the Scorpion Clan’s name. Teardrop Island was the eventual response. Located outside of the bay used for the city’s mercantile traffic, and with only a few convenient points to actually land ships, the island offers a perfect place to ensure both the integrity of the Licensed Quarter and the safety of guests, all under the governor’s complete control.

Teardrop Island exists for only one purpose: entertainment. The finest geisha houses in all of the Scorpion lands are found here – perhaps the finest anywhere, although plenty of rivals would dispute that. Most establishments here are centuries old, operating with the patronage of ancient Shosuro and Bayushi families who zealously guard their privilege and the wealth and prestige that it brings. Competition runs heavy and hard between these establishments, but is always kept within civilized bounds – none will risk the ire of the governor or the possibility of being expelled from the island. The first rule of visiting Teardrop Island is that weapons are not allowed by any who are not the authorized protectors of the island (which is to say, the Thunder Guard). This is a social expectation but effectively serves as a rule of law, since only those of very high station indeed can defy such expectations. Much like other such places, Teardrop Island allows guests to save face by leaving their weapons to be “polished” until they are ready to depart the island – this task is handled by a business located on the island’s only dock, where visitors drop off their weapons upon arrival and pick them up at departure. For the most nominal of fees, their treasured blades are treated with respect, cleaned and carefully tended. Even the Scorpion themselves respect this practice too much to plot a way past it. Geisha houses, sake houses, regulated gambling dens,opium parlors operating under the pretense of some other form of entertainment – all these and a variety of other esoteric establishments can be found within the low ornamental walls that surround Teardrop Island. Even the most decrepit of locations here would be considered respectable establishments almost anywhere else. A position as an entertainer within these walls is considered an honor and privilege, and those who works here are rightfully proud of their skills.

The Thunder Guard makes a strict effort to ensure Teardrop Island remains as peaceful and pleasant as possible. This is not a place of cheap sake and drunken revelers shouting at the top of their lungs before getting into dishonorable brawls; guests are expected to behave themselves, and house bouncers, well-trained doshin, and soldiers of the Thunder Guard cooperate to ensure no unruly behavior lasts long. Those who defile the Floating World with violence are summarily ejected as efficiently as possible, without exception. As a result, Teardrop Island is the safest and most peaceful district in the city, far more so than even the Noble and Temple Quarters.

The House of Foreign Stories

An unusual location in the otherwise strictly traditional Licensed Quarter, this geisha house is controlled by the Unicorn Clan as part of their effort to increase their influence in Ryoko Owari. It deliberately seeks to draw on the appeal of the exotic by recruiting geisha who are either foreign-born or who have noticeable gaijin blood. Indeed, the house’s greatest time of prominence comes in the early twelfth century when its okaa-san is herself a gaijin woman named Magda. The whole style and design of the House of Foreign Stories caters to the appeal of the exotic – not just in the identity of its geisha, but also in their clothing and even in the food and drink served in the establishment. Of course, plenty of samurai reject the place as inappropriate and borderline blasphemous (taking their business to the other houses, especially the House of the Morning Star) but just as many are drawn in by the allure of the exotic and forbidden.

The House of The Morning Star

The House of the Morning Star caters to precisely what the highest and most prestigious samurai expect of a geisha house. It is, without question, the finest establishment in Ryoko Owari and one of the finest in the Empire. As old as Teardrop Island itself, the House of the Morning Star is carefully upheld by the Governor’s favor to ensure it is both the finest and most proper of geisha houses in the city. Nothing is unusual or out of place, for this place caters to what is expected, and excels in this above all others.

The Towers of The Eyes

Located south of Teardrop Island, the Towers of the Eyes are the sole legacy of the Crab Clan’s brief occupation of the city in the seventh century. The Crab build these two towers (one on each bank of the river) to watch for any possible invasion fleet coming up or down the River of Gold. During times of war, a chain or cord can be strung between them to close the river to traffic. Rumors claim there are also tunnels connecting the towers beneath the river, although this has never been confirmed.

“Die Blume im Schatten”

In den Gärten der Insel gibt es viele verschiedene Blumen und Gewächse, deren Schönheit zu einem abendlichen Eingang einladen. Wagt man einen Schritt außerhalb der Wege und balanciert vorsichtig durch die blühenden Wiesen, so gelangt man zu einem kleinen, unauffälligen Beet im Schatten eines großen roten Ahornbaumes. Dort wächst ein Gewächs, das ein geschultes Auge als “Schwarzes Bilsenkraut” erkennen kann. Diese Pflanze kann als Rauschmittel eingesetzt werden, um die Sinne zu vernebeln und das Vergnügen zu steigern. Da jedoch einerseits die Grenzwerte von berauschender und toxischer Dosis sehr nahe beieinander liegen und andererseits der Wirkstoffgehalt drastisch schwankt, können sehr schnell schwere Vergiftungen auftreten, die aufgrund der hohen Toxizität der Stoffe auch tödlich enden können. Die zerstoßenen Samen und eine sehr geringe Dosis des Extrakts wirken wiederum schmerzlindernd und werden für die Heilung verwendet, auch für die Behandlung von Geschwüren und Geschwülsten. Manche Okaa-samas der Geishahäuser wissen um die Wirkung und nutzen sie zum Behandeln dieser unschicklichen Symptome. Samurai, vor allem Einheimische, kennen diesen kleinen, schattigen Ort und haben Nutzen von dem berauschenden und giftigen Nachtschattengewächs. Haben sie Bedarf, so fragen sie einen Diener oder eine Geisha nach “der Blume im Schatten”. Einige wissen Bescheid und bringen das erwünschte Öl oder Pulver, je nachdem was gerade unauffälliger ist. Dafür muss man natürlich gewisse Beziehungen zum Haus haben, damit jeder auf seine Kosten kommt…

Die “Bäche” von Teardrop Island

Auf der Insel gibt es keine (nennenswerten) Quellen, jedoch wünschen natürlich viele für die schöne Gestaltung der Anwesen einen Wasserlauf. Dies führt dazu, dass die Insel von mehreren kleinen Kanälen durchzogen ist, welche stets gut in Schuss gehalten werden. Zum Schutz vor dem Frühjahrshochwasser werden kleine Sperren errichtet, wenn dieses dann zurückgeht stehen die wichtigsten Wartungsarbeiten an. Danach bieten die “Bäche” wieder den gewohnten angenehmen Anblick.

Die Grünen Laternen

Fast alle Farben von Laternen hängen überall an den Fenstern und Dachüberhängen der Geschäfte und Läden. Während selbst schwarze und weiße Laternen sich häufig finden, sieht man allerdings etwas seltener solche aus grünem Papier. Diese hängen nicht, weil es sie nicht gibt, sondern weil ihre Anwesenheit unter den eingeweihten eine Einladung zu bestimmten Veranstaltungen in den Hinterzimmern darstellt oder die Anwesenheit eines besonderen Vergnügens anpreist. Nur wer das Signal sieht und dann auch weis, wonach er fragen muss, wird dann auch in die Separees vorgelassen. Was allerdings beworben wird ist häufig fast ein größeres Geheimnis als das mit den Laternen für etwas geworben wird. So ist es den Inselkundingen fast ein Spiel, dezent herauszufinden, worum es geht und dann an dem Angebot teilzuhaben, bevor die Laterne wieder verschwunden ist.
Während in Teehäusern die Grünen Laternen manchmal als Einladung zu einer Teezeremonie mit einem Meister incognito fungieren, können sie an anderen Orten weitaus dunklere Vergnügungen bewerben. Mancherorts wird dem kundigen Kenner dann auf Nachfrage der verbotene Fugu gereicht, andernorts wird dem geneigten Samurai der Rollentausch mit einer Geisha oder einem Geiko zuteil.

Sadahakos Schrein

In der großen Gartenanlage von Teardrop Island befindet sich, umgeben von eleganten Blumen und blühenden Sträuchern unter einer Weide ein kleiner Schrein zu Ehren des Schicksals der Geisha und Künstler. Eine schlichte, aber kunstvoll gearbeitete Statue einer Geisha steht auf dem Altar und Gerüchten zu Folge soll ein Daimyo der Shosuro den Schrein gesponsert haben.

Teehaus “Liebliche Düfte”

Entspanntes sitzen ist möglich. Räucherwerk erfüllt die Luft. Bedienungen sind auch Gesellschafterinnen, wenn sie auch nicht mit Geisha mithalten können. Die Auswahl des Tees ist gut. Es gibt auch Snacks und Sake. Das Teehaus bietet eine Kombination aus "Tee Menüs" und “Sake Menüs" an. Hier sind die Tees und Snacks aufeinander abgestimmt, ebenso Snacks und Sake, um ein rundes Geschmackserlebnis zu bieten. Es gibt private Hinterzimmer für ausgewählte Gäste. Möglicherweise Verbindung zu Klan Mantis.

Eine kleinere Okiya, welche sich das Thema der Frühlingsblüten zum Motto gemacht hat. Manche meinen, es sei nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, bis das Haus der Frühlingsblüten erweitert werden muss.

Die Okiya der silbernen Mondsichel ist wenig bekannt.

Das Haus der Herbstblätter ist, ähnlich wie das der Frühlingsblüten, eher klein.

Es gab eine Zeit, in der dir Okiya der Singvögel eine Konkurrenz zu den beiden größten Häusern der Träneninsel war. Doch diese Zeit ist lange vorüber...der Ruf der guten Sängerinnen ist jedoch geblieben.

Nicht so bekannt, wie das Haus des Morgensterns oder das der Fremden Geschichten, doch ähnlich groß.

Die kleine Okiya der tanzenden Schmetterlinge hat den Fokus der Unterhaltung auf Tänze gelegt und soll Gerüchten zu Folge die besten Tänzerinnen unter den Geisha und Maiko die ihren nennen.
