Shackles

Imperial Shackles are magical bindings imposed on Indents (indentured servants) by the Eternal Empire. These mystical constructs are both a physical manifestation of their servitude and a means of enforcing control over the Indents. The shackles are created using advanced arcane runes, ensuring compliance and preventing escape - they are usually implemented by imperial sorcerers at an indent's birth (or at the time of one becoming an indent). The shackles are both a literal and metaphorical representation of the Empire’s control. They signify not just physical servitude but also the Empire’s dominion over the very essence of its subjects’ lives.

Appearance and Mechanics

Arcane Runes

Shackles appear as glowing blue rune-like tattoos on the wrist or forearm, their intensity linked to the individual’s level of debt. The runes pulse with a faint light, reflecting the magical energy binding the Indent to their contract. Should an indent's shackled arm be removed, the spell will automatically attach itself onto another limb - eventually, forming around the indents neck should not enough body surface remain suitable.

Debt Display

The shackles display the Indent's current debt in glowing script, visible to all who are close enough to see it. This public marker serves as a constant reminder of their servitude and a tool for social control. Debt is displayed as time owed to the Empire, rather than a monetary value; many indents even have debt exceeding that of their own lifespan.

Tracking and Surveillance

Shackles are imbued with powerful tracking magic, allowing the Empire to monitor an Indent’s location at all times. This has limitations: it can only track your general location which can direct the authorities to search a general area for you, but your precise location is still obscure unless you have been scryed. As well, this tracking does not detect the use of magic or other illegal activity by the indent, but may be used to track those who have been identified by imperial authorities.

Soul Bonding

The shackle is magically linked to the Indent’s soul, making removal nearly impossible without severe consequences. The only means is through an illegal and dangerous ritual known as The Rite of Severance, performed by rogue sorcerers.
