Wasp Nest, The

The Wasp Nest is a small fortress in the Brights, also known as Fenhold or simply the Nest. It sits at the junction of major roadways from years past, where the Brights, Yeast Ave and Fenfield all meet.

Despite being cobbled together from torn down buildings and abandoned vehicles, the tall hexagonal walls of the Nest are formidable. The central structure is raised up on the remains of the overpass, with armories, barracks and miscellaneous other buildings scattered throughout the complex.

Given the close proximity with Fenfield, the soldiers in the Nest are always on high alert, watching vigilantly for any incursions.

Demographics

The population of Fenhold is primarily women trained as soldiers and scouts. This is probably the location in the Brights with the highest military presence, and the Brightling forces are supplemented with female mercenaries from the Roc.

There are some male servants, though they are far outnumbered and are vetted carefully to ensure minimal risk to the Nest's operations. While a rebellion within the walls of the base might easily be put down, any success would both heavily arm the rebels and inspire hope throughout the district. Any mercenaries are similarly scrutinized, fearing that payment might not be strong enough incentive to guard the borders of a district not one's own with as much vigor as is necessary.

Outside of 12 Corn Hairs itself, there are few locations in the Brights that are more publicly religious as Fenhold. In an effort to instill a sense of nationalistic pride and duty into its occupants, there are a number of priestesses dedicated to ensuring zealotry.

Government

The Wasp Nest is highly disciplined and governed via military hierarchy. At the top of the fort is the Commander, with various soldiers and officers below her. She makes most policy decisions that directly concern the Nest, but does answer to the Queen and the Council of Matrons.

Outside of the military ordering, the priestesses of the Nest occupy a nebulous place in the rankings. They serve as counsellors to the Commander, and generally hold influence over the soldiers and servants of the fort, though they do not officially hold any power.

Defences

Walls, watch towers and more soldiers than anywhere else in the Brights.

Industry & Trade

None in particular.

Infrastructure

Fenfold has a well and various food stores, allowing it to be somewhat self sufficient in the event of a siege, and to help prevent reliance on any one district. Most food shipped to the fortress comes directly from 12 Corn Hairs for a similar reason: This important military base is supposed to be under no authority aside from that of the district's ruling body.

Aside from food and water, the roads leading to and from the Wasp Nest are well maintained to facilitate both commerce and communication.

Assets

Food and weapon stockpiles.

Guilds and Factions

Some tensions between military and religious figures. Mercenaries and male servants are separate group from Brightling soldiers.

History

The Wasp Nest was established maybe 15 years ago, following the events of the Fenfield incursion and small slave uprising. Since then, numerous raids have been repelled, though none as large as the original.
