Hellscape
Hellscape is a holding that stands as the largest of only a few safe zones located within the Fenfield district. Much like what its name suggests, it overlooks the worst parts of Fenfield, as it is located in the central most part of the district. It remains relatively untouched by the fen due to its concrete and industrialized composition, which is largely ignored. The holding itself is very deteriorated but still stands quite strong. Most of the people residing within Hellscape are those who are physically unable to cross the treacherous swamps without the risk of death. As such, there is a very tightly woven community that lives there and relies mostly on refugees or travelers who are passing by. They do not help with kindness, however, and aren't above overcharging to get by or murdering travelers for their resources if things become dire.
Demographics
The permanent residents of Hellscape are all quite diverse in nature, as a good amount of them are those who have been exiled from other districts. In terms of gender, the ratio leans more toward men. A good amount of the inhabitants who live inside the Murk are either old, physically handicapped, or have no home to go to, forcing them to spend the rest of their days within Hellscape.
Government
The system of government within Hellscape is very basic. Because of the small population, it is primarily a simple democracy led by the eldest inhabitant. Laws and rules are made by popular vote. Anyone who disobeys the laws or rules are banished from Hellscape, or sent directly into the fen itself. However, this almost never happens, as the people are essentially living out life sentences anyway, no one would dare make things worse for everyone.
Defences
The fen itself acts as a natural "moat" that prevents people from trying to infiltrate Hellscape. There are only four ways to enter or exit the holding, with paths that lead in an out from the North, South, East, and West. These pathways are protected by giant metal gates, which can only be opened from a steel tower that stands adjacent to the said gate.
Industry & Trade
The primary form of trade in the Hellscape is its rooming and boarding, as well as travel information and guidance.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure of Hellscape is very deteriorated but still structurally integral. Much of the area is concrete, and a lot of the eroded or ruined parts have been patched up with metal. Other structures are made of metal such as watermills for generating electricity, bridges that extend from Hellscape to other areas of Fenfield, or even the houses that people have made.
Assets
The assets of Hellscape are very minimal, with most inhabitants living with just enough to get by. They do not have any luxury or riches. In drastic situations, the inhabitants will often hire travelers to get them food or any other resources they might be running low on.
Guilds and Factions
Hellscape contains only the sole faction of people that inhabit it. Because of their situation, the inhabitants are quite trusting of each other and almost like family. They have to work together to survive, or they all will suffer.
History
For as long as Fenfield has been a dangerous land, so have the people of Hellscape continued to survive. Concrete that has deteriorated has been replaced with steel sheets, in a patchwork-like style. The people who currently live within the Hellscape are descendants from those who stayed, people who refused to leave due to fear of death or were unable to because of their physical health, as well as people who were exiled from their previous district. The landscape itself has stayed relatively the same throughout most of Hellscape as it is located right in the middle of the district. There are however a number of metal bridges and footings that have been made around the holding to better interconnect the district and eliminate most of the swamp within the holding.
