People know Darwin.
Darwin is that old guy down the street, or at least they were. They were that one gang leader who ransacked a settlement and took all their ammunition, and all their trash. Darwin was that one guy who blew themselves up into a million little pieces trying to build a flying machine. Yet for all people have seen and heard Darwin do, nobody actually knows who they are.
And that is how Darwin wants it to be.
About twenty years ago, in the long abandoned shopping complex in South Pitts, a tiny bit of green sprouted from a crack in the concrete floor. That green grew into a beautiful plant, with flowers of black and purple, and vines that cracked and moved the concrete away so that it may grow larger and larger. The former mall gained an inhabitant, and in this place, a place so engulfed in the Maelstrom, the plant thought.
After some thinking and a bit of doing, the plant managed to learn how to grow itself and to use the Maelstrom to mutate its genes, allowing it to develop a spore which allowed immunity to the effects of the Maelstrom. This plant spread out and gathered 23 individual handlers, to tend to it and carry out its will. Yet, for all it's power, this plant had not yet reached its full potential and it knew it.
It opened itself again to the storm, taking all it could, and developing an even more powerful strain of spore. Beyond mind altering, this spore was mind controlling. The plant used this, exploited this weakness in people, and learned. It learned of the old world, of science, of the process by which organisms adapt to their environments and took the name of the person who discovered it. Darwin.
Ever since, the plant has remained, letting their minions tend to them, but they explore the world outside, sometimes trying to be free, sometimes trying to learn, sometimes just to do anything that comes to mind, regardless of their host's safety, or sometimes to try to become something more. Only one thing about Darwin ever stays the same. They evolve.

They developed their first spores around 2040, but grew tired of weeding out subjects and developed the others while they waited.
