Il Luathar

Units of Measurement

  • Sadhiwë - The widthwise measure of a single grain. Approximately 1 millimeter in contemporary terms.
  • Dhiwë - Traditionally the lengthwise measure of a single grain. Standardized as four sadhiwë.
  • Luwë - Finger-breadth. Traditionally the diameter of the thickest finger. Standardized as two dhiwë.
  • Danwë - Hand-breadth. Traditionally the distance as measured from the base of the thumb to the bump opposite at the base of the pinky finger. Standardized as five Luwë.
  • Danalë - Hand-span. Traditionally, the distance as measured from the center of the wrist along the palm to the tip of the middle finger. Standardized as two Danwë.
