Intergalactic Smuggler
Intergalactic smugglers operate within deep space, trafficking goods (which may or may not be obtained legally) from one area of space to another, mostly focusing on bringing supplies into an area in which they are considered illegal. While most prefer to play safe and only move within Alliance territory, the most daring smugglers risk being caught in or exiled to more brutal territories by moving contraband into and out of Alliance space.
Social Standing
Most Alliance citizens, particularly those who work as law enforcement or within the ASF, believe that smugglers are nothing more than criminals set on accumulating wealth, as much as one can within a society which has outgrown material wealth. There are those, however, who depend on these intergalactic smugglers to provide them with essential provisions such as updated defence technology, newly developed medicines or replacement machine parts.
A Necessary Evil
Those living in bereft, war-torn or poverty-stricken areas, usually only found outside of Alliance territory, often find themselves living under a government or oppressive foreign regime which does not care enough about the common person to provide much needed supplies or loosen their laws to allow commoners to live comfortable and healthy lives. These people, victimised by capitalism and greed as they are, depend heavily on generous intergalactic smugglers to bring them crucial supplies which they lack the capability to obtain themselves in more legal manners.

In a System of Chaos
A favoured hideout and trading location for many smugglers is the Chaos System, whose laws allow "unaggressive, non-violent, and otherwise peaceful breakers of foreign laws" safe harbour on most of their planets. The Chaos System's anti-aggression and pro-trade laws have also qualified it as a neutral zone, preventing foreign law enforcement from interfering with smuggler business. For those looking to trade valuable wares, a notable smuggler HQ is located in Midpoint, found on CA2M1.
