Tattoos of Khrésyda
In the Khrésyda Islands, a tattoo symbolizes many things. Every person receives a simple band around their wrist at the age of fifteen, marking them as a working adult, and can add on to it as they grow.
For each great achievement in life, a person will receive another tattoo as a symbol of that milestone.
Execution
Each tattoo takes extensive preparation. The materials are blessed by the High Priest, and the recipient takes a full day of secluded meditation to prepare themselves.
The area of the tattoo is ceremonially washed in sea water and salt before the tattoo artist begins, and blessed by a shaman. No painkillers are consumed during the tattooing, as it's seen as a mark of strength to endure the pain.
Components and tools
Specially prepared charcoal is mixed with blessed seawater to form the ink, and a tattoo comb made of boar bone, sea turtle shell, and polished wood is used for the actual tattooing.
