2021/08/18: Cubit - Mysteries Death Part 3 Report
General Summary
Knight, Immori, Sith, Keel, Ios
The party began their effort to find the crown that had gone missing during the masked ball. Investigative notes follow.
~50 attendees total. Two stories in Tudor-style mansion. 12 servants.
The crown was being stored on the top floor of the residence.
Lots of little hidey-holes all over the place. Probably secret doors. Secret passages lead out of the premises from the residence (this passage being an ultra-secret escape route and way for the royals and those in relations with them to subtly enter and exit), the storage, and the stables. Other passages connect the stables to the garden, parts of the servants’ quarters to each other, and the servants’ quarters to the main hall. There are secret supplies in the kitchen and a secret vault area connected to the storage.
Guests are very cliquish.
In the storage area, Ios and Knight found a safe hidden in the storage area. Sizeable steel safe with several inches of lead on the inside. Difficult to get to. Contains several small, empty pouches and a platinum circlet.
Cooks are about ready to murder all the foul-mouthed, arrogant nobles.
Ios got a creepy feeling while in the residence (which is three stories, unlike rest of house). Knight saw what may be a ghost maid. The ghosts seem to be repelled by light. The ghost gradually formed after the lights were turned off, and once fully formed, she started cleaning.
There are some affairs going on in the servants’ quarters. Knight took some quick sketches of the participants for later identification.
Earl Richard Towerfall. Probably sociopath. Loud and concerning. Missing just before and during the dance. Brought in the safe that was hidden in storage. A warrior, used to using a lance and shield. Third-highest military officer in the kingdom. Took several minutes to rattle off his full title. Basically the guy in charge of the entire military. The queen is his sister in law. He says there are smuggling rings and questionable deals being made in the mansion. It looks like he was being taunted with the safe; he’d put bags of rare coinage in there as a trap for the smugglers, so having those emptied and the crown piece added is a bad sign.
Lady Daria Brightwater. Showing up everywhere. Appears to be conducting her own investigation. A darling lady with great ideas, against any sort of military practices, which would unfortunately weaken the kingdom. A pacifist idealist.
Gregory Atwood. Very interested in what’s going on. Talking to various groups. Was missing just before and during the dance? Busybody crusader. Basically a very minor noble who pokes into state secrets and other things he has no business with. Tendency to go through people’s social garbage and bring out things they wanted buried. If given incorrect information, could easily be turned against the queen.
Captain Isabella Blackburn. Very relaxed, as if she has not a care in the world. Very confident. Naval captain. Has saved the queen’s life on several occasions. Doesn’t know who took the crown, but if she did, this would be a murder investigation, not a theft investigation. Probably in very personal relationship with the queen, but is at least a very close friend.
Ebon Darkwater: Man who seems to have some other nobles as minions, coming to give him reports. He says there were people missing during the dance. Very particular in his wording when being questioned. Says there may be a coalition of conspirators who want to symbolically strike at the queen’s power by stealing the crown. Associated with thieves guild.
Earl Sheffield is suspicious. Seen exchanging a small item (smaller than a crown, probably) with someone. Young noble with more power than sense. Known to make poor allies, such as Ebon Darkwater.
Seperella Moonstone: Flighty woman, had to be calmed by Immori before she would answer any questions. Very high-strung. Brought by her husband, more interested in jewelry and outfits than anything else. There’s a woman, Rivella Thorn, whose jewelry got more impressive midway through the dance. A bracelet got a lot more carats.
Rivella Thorn has a clique of pretty women. She’s showing off the bracelet she got partway through the party, which has some of the crown jewels on it. She got the gift from Levoy Dentfield.
Kenneth Drewry is Levoy Dentfield’s friend, who “found” the jewels given to Rivella Thorn. Levoy Dentfield was given the jewels and then, thanks to a jewel making class he had taken once, he attached them to the bracelet he was already planning to give to Rivella. He used the tools in the stables.
Ghost maid: Fran, head maid. Has been a ghost for 340 years (341 years this June). Says three young, rude blokes stole the crown. One was very good with lock picks. Early 20’s or teenagers. One blonde, one black hair, one brown hair. With Fran’s help, we have excellent portraits of the three, one of whom is Kenneth Drewry. Knight made a very nice portrait of Fran to put on the wall, with “Employee of the Millennium” under it.
We found the rest of the gems by intimidating the thieves, getting help from Towerfall’s troops, and using a bit of magic. As we were leaving, Towerfall approached Atwood because “he could use a good investigator”. With that satisfying note, the second test was complete.
With the aid of the butler, we moved on to the next challenge. We found ourselves in a stone building that looked oddly like a police station. This impression was soon validated; we were taken to an interview room an introduced to a police officer. It seems there's been a murder, and we’re to find the real killer. We have all the witnesses, but the location is unavailable.
The victim is an innocent young lady about 17 years of age.
