If the Battle of St. Louis was a study into how to fight 27 then this was the study of how not to fight NEC-27. The Army and Air Force worked together in this fight, led by Operations Commander Leopold Simmons who was appointed by the Pentagon to pacify the major Zombie Nest in Indianapolis.
The Air Force dedicated 3 Elements which consisted of several squadrons of A-10s, F-22s and 35's, as well as some remaining F16s and F18s. The Army Dedicated 5 Companies initially and they took the opposite approach of Sternn. Simmons believed that Victory in Depth was required rather than surgical strikes so he would move large Extermination Teams.
The Companies would travel in clumps, clearing out large sectors but taking heavy casualties, in the first engagement, they lost 3 companies of men and vehicles due to mass encirclement by Zombies, only getting rescued by the Air Force. Because they were using heavier helicopters to carry more troopers, they found it difficult to navigate the ambushes the infected would lay, such as climbing up and along buildings and jumping up onto each other when Vehicles got too close.
When it came to defeating the more advanced Mutagenic horrors of NEC-27 such as the Ogres, humanoid but animalistic warriors who could use guns, the Army found itself caught out more than once when the Supply Helicopters would get shot down, allowing the clever mutants to monopolise on Army weaknesses more easily.
Eventually, the Nest in Indianapolis became so bad and so advanced that General Sternn who took over once Simmons was bitten and turned. Decided the only option was Nuclear Devastation and conducted a mass nuclear strike before dumping Napalm bombs for months on top of Ground Zero.
Reducing the entire city to ashen radioactive ruins but the Infection was wiped out.
