The Great Maze

The Great Maze is the third layer of the Underground of Reldaz. This layer is the roots from the Forest of the Lost and is a highly dense maze as a result. This layer is considered one of the last "safe" layers before some of the more dangerous creatures of the underground appear, acting as a barrier thanks to the lack of proper earth for creatures to travel through.

Geography

The Great Maze gets its names from the highly packed vines and roots that are a result of the Forest of the Lost above it. The roots form pockets that allow for travel between them, but many of these pockets loop into one another, allowing one to easily get lost if not careful. The roots generally tend to stay one color or another and the roots tend to heal quickly, making traditional marking methods of travel not possible.

Ecosystem

This layer of the underground is the true heart of the Forest of the Lost, and where the majority of the water that is used by the plants above is stored. Any water that is able to make it past all of the other layers are eventually collected on the layer below, which the roots of the Great Maze reach down to collect, creating a connected escosystem from the surface to this layer.

Climate

This is one of the last layers that are affected by climate. When Spring begins to melt the snow on the surface, parts of the Great Maze become flooded for a time.

Fauna & Flora

Beyond standard roots, great volumes of vines also grow in this layer, which can hide passages or creatures. Honey Pot Ant Queens also make their homes in this layer, away from the dangers of the Forest of the Lost. Thanks to the pools of water that can be found here, there are also a number of crustaceans and other aquatic animals
