Aether
Magic within the world of Reldaz is conducted using Aether. Aether is an arcane force similar to winds that ignores most materials. Generally, the winds exist on the Aetheral Plane, which replaces the classic Ethereal Plane in D&D. They function exactly the same, but the plane itself is considered the source of all magic, regardless of how it is channeled or who casts it.
Magical items are said to be able to contain or conduct Aether. Spellcasters are said to drain the aether of the area. It is hypothesized that it is possible to drain an area of Aether, making magic impossible, but this has never occurred.
Manifestation
When a creature is able to see the forces of Aether, it appears as a see-through color changing mist, almost like seeing through a cloud of an oil spill. Once a spell is cast, the colors of the Aether change to be a color associated with the school of magic.
