Smog Species in Reason's End | World Anvil

Smog

Smogs are living clouds of poisonous gas. They are Lesser Aberrants of theĀ  Ancient of Filth, specifically of the Aspect of Poison. They exist specifically to exacerbate the ill-effects of air pollution. The most powerful of these creatures require the intervention of a country's National Agency to properly deal with.

They have become more common due to increased pollution in modern times, but laws on air-pollution control has slowed down their births, somewhat. Still, they are a danger to human society and an incentive for Initiates to support non-Initiate efforts to deal with pollution.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Their bodies look like that of mundane smogs. In fact, the main difference between a Smog and a smog is that the former are alive and magical. Otherwise, they look completely indistinguishable.

Genetics and Reproduction

Smogs are born from literal smogs and other forms of air pollution. These air pollutants needs to reach a critical mass before a new Smog is born. Formal research has shown that the more ambient magic present in the environment, the lower the required critical mass.

Ecology and Habitats

Smogs are most commonly found in industrial centres where a lot of air pollutants are released, though it is possible to encounter them in more residential, and even rural areas depending on both ambient magic levels and available air pollutants.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Smogs can feed on air pollutants. Doing so allows them to grow larger and more powerful. Larger Smogs can even assimilate smaller ones, which makes the bigger one even more dangerous.

Behaviour

Smogs seek out air pollutants to feed on, and then discharges them where living creatures, even humans, are. That is their sole purpose for being.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Through unknown means, they can instictively detect air pollutants.
