The Ice Court

Overview

The Ice Court was established by Princess Sara of Kyrus with a visionary purpose: to harness the talents of the realm’s naturally gifted frost mages and prepare for an uncertain future. Under her leadership, the Court champions a philosophy of adaptation and mastery over the elemental forces of their icy homeland, encouraging its members to use the pervasive cold and snow to their advantage. This progressive outlook fosters change and innovation, urging the otherwise traditionalist nation to embrace the unknown rather than fear it.   Contrasting sharply with the Ice Court’s forward-thinking approach is the staunchly traditionalist Svozno Patriarchate, which leads the worship of the The Divine Flame, the state religion of the Tsardom. The clash between these two powers shapes much of the political and cultural landscape of Kyrus, highlighting a deep divide between old dogmas and new possibilities.   Many members of the Ice Court were tragically orphaned or outcast by their own burgeoning powers, which inadvertently brought harm to their families, or they were abandoned out of fear by those same families. Others were already outcasts or orphans who found in their powers a means to rise above their circumstances. Recognizing the potential within these mages, the Ice Court offers sanctuary, sustenance, and a sense of belonging, uniting its members in a common cause. Together, they strive to utilize their frost magic to improve the lives of their compatriots, mitigating the damage and pain once caused by their unchecked abilities. Despite facing rejection from many in society, the Ice Court stands as a beacon of acceptance and transformation, dedicated to the betterment of Kyrus through the controlled and benevolent use of their powers.

Structure

The Ice Court is structured akin to an academic institution, presided over by none other than the Ice Princess herself, Sara Svytloslaw. While she holds the royal title of Princess, within the confines of the Court, she is sometimes referred to as the Head Mistress.   Directly beneath the Head Mistress are her most trusted advisors, the Magisters. These seasoned frost mages are the eldest and most skilled practitioners of frost magic within the court. They serve as the Princess's primary delegates, overseeing the Court’s operations and ensuring the fidelity of its missions to her vision.   Below the Magisters, the titles vary among those who have achieved mastery over the element of frost. Women may adopt the titles of Frost Maiden, Ice Maiden, sometimes rudely called Ice Witch. Men, on the other hand, are typically known as Frost Mage, Ice Mage, or informaly as Ice Wizard. These titles are interchangeable, and these individuals collectively uphold the core functions of the Ice Court, engaging as educators, guardians, missionaries, and scribes among other roles.   At the foundational level are the Acolytes, novices in the art of frost magic who have yet to attain mastery. Acolytes are required to practice their burgeoning skills only under the supervision of a qualified tutor, ensuring both their safety and the proper development of their magical abilities.
