Gateway Gems

Gateway gems are traded by Shroom People in order to let people enter different sections of the forest via a vine gateway.
Areas of the forest that can be accessed with a gateway gem:
  • Ring Tree Forest
  • Shadow Tree Forest
  • Sparcatchling Tree Forest
  • Forest Glades
  • Horned Beast Caves

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Once the gateway gem is placed into the mass of the vine gateway, runes will appear (as light on the surface of the gem) and be transferred into the vine gateway. The light will then run from the mass through a number of the vines and once they reach the edge of the vine gateway, the vines will open up allowing access into the forest.
If there are multiple people wishing to enter the same area of forest, then each gem can be inserted into the vines largest mass (or multiple masses if that gateway has a few larger masses). The gems work the same way, however each time a gem is used, the flooring will work out how many people cross it. Usually, there is a stone vine floor at each gateway.

Significance

To collect a gem, one must trade a random 'piece of life' with the Shroom People and answer a math question related to the area of the forest one wishes to travel to. A piece of life may be anything from a pulled thread from your current clothing to an engagement ring (*story to come). Small things that can fit inside the mushroom homes of the Shroom People are preffered.
Once a gem is obtained, one may go to the 'vine gateway' of the area of the forest they wish to visit. Placing a gem into the mass of the vine will open up the vines and allow access into that section of the forest. The gem may be collected, and used to leave the forest area once the visit is over.
After visiting the forest, one may return the given gem to the Shroom People and collect their initial trade item. This dissappoints the Shroom People, but will not prevent one from any future trades/forest access.

What a fun world concept! I love the Shroom People's method of guardianship. A "piece of life" and math. *chef's kiss*   It did spur a few questions! Do people ever keep their gems? Can they work more than once or do they need to be imbued with magic by the Shroom People in future visits?   Looking forward to reading more!

Thank you very much! And good questions too ~   Although there is common etiquette regarding keeping or trading of gems (as well as I'm still deciding between whether the gems are absorbed once used in the gateways, or they become a 'piece of life' once traded with) I do plan on a short story about someone who is effectively stuck inside a part of the forest as a result of not following the etiquette.

My current passion is Shroom People. I still don't know much about them yet. But as I do, it will be updated here:

The random "piece of life" requirement is intriguing, and I am curious about how that works. Which party determines what the item is, the person wanting the gem or the shroom people? If it's a piece of life from someone else, would it be acceptable? For example, suppose I borrow a friend's hat, then try to get a gem for it--am I going to be in trouble? What if I knitted the hat for them in the first place?

Ooh, nice questions! The sentiment and adherence to the trade is more important than what the actual piece is. If it was your friends hat, for example, you could argue that as your friend is important to you, their hat has become a symbol of that importance. A number of Shroom People are quite interested in the story you might offer with the trade, rather than the item itself. Others (though they are rarer in the group) will just accept anything quickly in order for you to be on your way. So, as long as there is some sort of trade, there is no trouble :)
