Avernus
The infernal home of demons and devils
Avernus is a hellish plane of existence below our own. It is the origin of devils, demons and all infernal beings. Avernus has no single ruler but is instead locked in a constant battle for territory and dominance between the demon lords. In Avernus there are no creature comforts, food may be brought into the plane but will taste of ash and brimstone and drinks taste of bile and sick. For all intensive purposes, Avernus is a living hell.
Geography
Avernus is a charred wasteland of vast ashen plains covered in rubble and the occasional line of foothills and basalt mountains heaped with broken rocks of obsidian and quartz. The ubiquitous presence of rocks and boulders, some of which seem to resemble tormented faces and shapes of creatures, render the terrain extremely treacherous and difficult to cross at any pace quicker than a fast walk. A blood-red light fills the very air and huge fireballs fly at random through the sky, occasionally impacting and exploding wherever they hit. There is no sun or stars in the Avernus sky. The River Styx runs through Avernus, with a number of offshoots and falls.
