Omeratzu

Omeratzu are a species of beings with unknown origins. Most believe they are a myth, however they are not. They are snake like humanoids that disguise themselves as beggars, wearing tattered robes, torn & stitched gloves, their faces covered by tattered cloth, nothing exposes their snake like appearance.   They'll act like the homeless and seriously poverty stricken, they'll beg for food & coin, but ask for much. To them, it is not about what they get, but who helps those in need and who laughs or treats them like garbage. If a person gives them anything of value or food, they will speak in an alien tongue for a few seconds and bless the person, no matter how much was given - anything they collect will be given to other beggars, for they have no need of money or the food they are given.   However if a person were to laugh at them, treat them like garbage, call them names, or do something similar to another beggar, then they'll curse them by touch with a disease that acts like Rot, but doesn't kill the victim, plus it isn't contagious as it will only affect the person who received the curse. The only way to lift the curse is to be blessed by an Omeratzu, otherwise the curse will stay with the person forever, not even prayers to a deity will help.   Omeratzu also have a secondary function, to track down any evil doer who kills or assaults a beggar, and kill the person with their sword. The Sword itself is a Katana, but it can only be used by the Omeratzu who owns (no other may use it), and any attempt to use it they won't be able to lift, whether physical, mental, or magical. What makes the blade special is that it is used to trap souls within the blade, it can be used to resurrect an innocent, and it is the only thing that can kill an Omeratzu.   Omeratzu can be killed by regular means, however unless killed by their own sword, the Omeratzu will just keep coming back (within 1 hour), and will relentlessly hunt down it's killer. The only way to get an Omeratzu to commit suicide is if an innocent is killed - they will try to avenge the victim, however if unsuccessful and their quarry escapes, they will return to the victim, perform a prayer, touch their blade then the victim. Afterward the Omeratzu will plunge their sword into itself, and as it dies, the victim is resurrected. The body of the Omeratzu disintegrates. Once the Omeratzu dies, the sword becomes useless as it will rust and lose it's powers.   All Omeratzu behave like this, the only times they'll speak is when begging, before blessing/cursing someone, and their ritual to resurrect an innocent. They don't have any other abilities beyond their blessings, curses, and resurrections. They don't expect praise, fame, in fact they prefer to be hidden from everyone, and not one of them will commit an evil act. No one knows where they come from, why they do what they do, why the follow this very strict code, and how many there are.

Basic Information

Anatomy

2 arms, 2 legs, scaly body, head of a snake, 4 clawed hands, and four clawed feet. The color of their scales varies from individual to individual - they can be completely black, other can be green, blue, and will even have a mixture of colors. Their eyes are snake eyes, and they stand upright like any other humanoid.

Genetics and Reproduction

They cannot reproduce, yet it is unclear how more show up on Azaeris.

Ecology and Habitats

They are typically found in cities where many other beggars are located. Others will watch from a distance just outside of a city, however they don't appear to need a home.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The only things they seem to eat are small rodents like most other snakes, however they can go without food for weeks to months.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their eye sight is incredibly sharp, they can see a maximum distance of 20 miles and focus on whatever it is they are looking for (They could a read book from 20 miles away). They can also alter their vision from regular to heat at will, allowing them to hunt prey in the dark. Their physical senses are also quite sharp as well, they can feel vibrations in the ground for a maximum distance of 5 miles - making it nigh impossible to sneak up on them.

An interesting take on the old cliche of a "good mage disguised as a beggar, testing the party". I enjoyed the read, some of the writing felt a bit like you turned a list into sentences, especially near the beginning, but nothing stood out too terribly. Some usage of synonyms and comma, as if narrating the species may help with this.   I would love to know more about how their curse and blessing ability evolved if it's of mystical origin if they are minor deities (my first impression was this) of beggar's acting as almost household gods to them, etc.

Mystical origin, yes. Minor deities, no. Not sure what you mean by comma since there are commas in the article. List into sentences?? Again, not following since I never intended to make this article into a list.

This is a fascinating concept, quite interestingly placed into the world. I like the idea of a species whose behaviour can be seen as quite peculiar but in a way that still seems to fit in the grander scheme of things.

If no one else can use their swords, and their swords are the only thing that can kill them, does that mean they are functionally immortal besides suicide?

Yup. Say you were the evil doer being chased by an Omeratzu, the only way you could stop it is kill an innocent, like a child then successfully escape it. After that you won't see that Omeratzu ever again. But if more than one is after you, like say 3 of them, then you're pretty well screwed.

However if you are a good person, then you have nothing to fear from the Omeratzu as they will never attack another without justifiable cause.

In a D&D sense, they are basically Immortal Paladins that act like similar to Samurai.
