Race Overview

  Inherent Abilities:
  • You have a Darkvision radius of 60ft.
  • You have advantage on checks to determine how a nonmagical item functions.
  • You have a prehensile tail It has a reach of 5 feet, and it can lift a number of pounds equal to five times your Strength score. You can use it to do the following simple tasks: lift, drop, hold, push, or pull an object or a creature; open or close a door or a container; or reload a weapon. It can't wield weapons or shields or do anything that requires manual precision, such as using tools or magic items or performing the Somatic components of a spell.
  • You are acclimated to hot weather and do not suffer any ill effects from Extreme Heat below 140F. You do, however, suffer disadvantage when resisting effects from Extreme Cold. Wearing Cold Weather Clothing negates both of these, but you must still make saving throws against Extreme Cold.
  • The amount of food you need is halved while in cold climates.
Point Balance: 23
Size: Small
Speed: 25ft
Language: You know International and Malbud, a dialect of Draconic.
Age: The Malbud are considered mature by age 5 and can live around 100 years.
Physical Description: Most of the Malbud stand only a little over two feet tall, with only their most elite warriors: the Dragonshields, standing above three feet. Kobolds can unbend their backwards knees to stand about a foot higher, but it is very painful for them to do it. They possess a humanoid body with scaly skin and a reptilian head. Kobolds also have small horns protruding from the back of their head, although these serve no practical purpose. Their scale color depends on which subrace of Kobold they are:
  • Swordscale Kobolds are often reddish brown in color, although a Swordscale may be born with scales of a color reflecting their draconic heritage, like White, Red or Black.
  • Pyritescale Kobold scales are pale to brassy yellow in color that can sometimes appear closer to a metallic gray or even tarnished silver.
  • Shadowscale Kobold scales are black and glossy, like obsidian, and are almost mirror-like when polished.

Subraces

There are three distinct subraces of Kobolds with distinct abilities:
  • Pyritescale: Kobolds who moved further South from the Exile Lands to Tillenia. They live among Humans there, and even have their own city, Lankirith, which is named for the patron saint of spies: Kiri. Pyritescale Kobolds draw their power from Eleyna, the Pneumanian goddess of tricksters, travelers, and thieves. Pyritescale Kobolds are the most cooperative with other species, although they have fought many wars against fellow Tillenians both to expand and defend their city-state.
  • Swordscale: Kobolds who dominate the Exile Lands, they follow Manafa's Creed and prioritize mastery of the sword as a sign of their freedom from the Covenant of the True Dragons. Swordscales also draw arcane power from the Chromatic Dragons, and have long been fighting on two fronts against Humanity in Huvaria and the Dragonborn of Tarragon.
  • Shadowscale: The Shadowscale infest the Worldspine Mountains and are concentrated heavily between the Exile Lands and Scion. The Shadowscale draw their power from the Shadowfell and worship the Great Devourer, a massive serpent that is constantly devouring itself. In the last days of the 2nd Era, the Devourer will turn on Halaran and devour the world and begin the next part of the kalpa. Shadowscale Kobolds believe that their devotion to the beast will guarantee themselves rulership of the world in the 3rd Era. In most theologies, the Devourer is believed to be a creature of the Deceiver and Alkar.
