Draconic

Draconics, or "Taneel," refers to two distantly related races, some might even say separate species, with a shared past. Both are native to Isan and have inhabited it since the first years of the Second Era. Both made covenants to serve the True Dragons, a group of Dragons with godlike powers, and receive a large swath of Isan in return. Some time during the 1st millennium, the Malbud (meaning "Oathbreakers") broke their covenant with the True Dragons and briefly sided with the Shadow to do so. The alliance was one of convenience, and the Malbud quickly broke away after free from the True Dragons. The Yatiri (meaning "Dedicated") kept to their oaths, yet somehow failed the True Dragons. In penance for this they exiled themselves to the wastes of Tarragon until they were forgiven by the True Dragons. Following the Great Collapse, the True Dragons completely disappeared from Halaran, leaving the Yatiri unforgiven. Since those ancient times, the Taneel were pushed back further and further by Humanity. The Malbud used to rule all of Huvaria and Irallel, which was called "The Dragon Basin" in those days. Now they inhabit the hinterlands of eastern Huvaria and a few small pockets of the Southlands.

Malbud (Kobold)

The Malbud are distant relatives of the Yatiri, being able to trace their lineage back to their mutual service of the True Dragons. The Malbud, in ancient times, somehow angered the True Dragons, and were cursed with their current form. In response, many of the Malbud turned to worshiping the more animalistic, and barbaric False Dragons. Other groups of the Malbud shun the worship of gods, making them one of the few races where Atheism is normalized. The Malbud now live in the lands surrounding Tarragon and have a long-standing feud with the Yatiri, stronger than any of their other grudges. Many of the Malbud were even willing to side with Humanity during the War of the Dragon purely to have a chance to fight their hated rivals.
The Malbud are often overlooked due to their physical weakness by the other major races. This is an advantage, rather than a hindrance to the Malbud, as they are able to build up massive populations in their subterranean civilizations without attracting much notice. The Malbud often use these populations to mine out the earth for precious metals and gems as offerings to their Gods, or as trade goods. Some of the largest tribes of the Malbud are as wealthy as any great Brevenni king or Sea Elf merchant and number in the hundreds of thousands.

Inherent Racial Ability:
  • You have a Darkvision radius of 60ft.
  • You have advantage on checks to determine how a nonmagical item functions.
  • You have a prehensile tail It has a reach of 5 feet, and it can lift a number of pounds equal to five times your Strength score. You can use it to do the following simple tasks: lift, drop, hold, push, or pull an object or a creature; open or close a door or a container; or reload a weapon. It can't wield weapons or shields or do anything that requires manual precision, such as using tools or magic items or performing the Somatic components of a spell.

  • The amount of food you need is halved while in cold climates.
Point Balance: 23
Size: Small
Speed: 25ft
Language: You know International and Malbud, a dialect of Draconic.
Age: The Malbud are considered mature by age 5 and can live around 100 years.
Physical Description: Most of the Malbud stand only a little over two feet tall, with only their most elite warriors: the Dragonshields, standing above three feet. Kobolds can unbend their backwards knees to stand about a foot higher, but it is very painful for them to do it. They possess a humanoid body with scaly skin and a reptilian head. Kobolds also have small horns protruding from the back of their head, although these serve no practical purpose. Their scale color depends on which subrace of Kobold they are:
  • Swordscale Kobolds are often reddish brown in color, although a Swordscale may be born with scales of a color reflecting their draconic heritage, like White, Red or Black.
  • Pyritescale Kobold scales are pale to brassy yellow in color that can sometimes appear closer to a metallic gray or even tarnished silver.
  • Shadowscale Kobold scales are black and glossy, like obsidian, and are almost mirror-like when polished.

Social Difficulty:
4. The Malbud are disliked by the vast majority of Halaran. The exception to this rule are Pyritescales, as they are considered "civilized" enough and their scales are believed to be good luck. In Huvaria, Kobold raids are not an uncommon thing. Many Kobold clans serve evil dragons, or even worse powers in the case of the Shadowscale, in exchange for riches and influence. Additionally, many Kobolds in the Southlands inhabit sewer systems and caves. Here, they form thieves' guilds or bandit gangs. All of these behaviors combined make the average person distrust the Malbud, even if their swordsmanship and inventive abilities are extraordinary. Among Yatiri, your social difficulty increases to 5 due to the ancient hatred between your people. In the Yatiri code of honor, it brings more honor to kill a Kobold than any other non-Yatiri.

Yatiri (Dragonborn/Lizardfolk)

The Yatiri are the greatest survivalists in Isan, and have lived there since the first year of the Second Era, if not longer. They can go for months with little food or water, and their claws are just as effective as some swords. They inhabit the scorched wastes of Tarragon, somewhere no other race would be able to survive. The Yatiri, aside from their affinity for an environment no other living soul would want to inhabit, are known for their byzantine laws of honor and responsibility, which only the Yatiri truly understand. One example of their alien laws is that a Yatiri will never wield a sword since it is, more often than not, an offense of great dishonor that can only be repaid by the death of the individual who held the sword.
The Yatiri were once led by the True Dragons, those who could bend reality to their whim like any divine being. The ultimate fate of the True Dragons is unknown, although they have not been seen in millennia. Yatiri folklore tells that the Yatiri failed the True Dragons in the past, although it is long-forgotten how they did.
Race Lore: Dragonborn
Race Perk Page: Dragonborn Perks
Inherent Racial Ability:
  • Your tail, teeth, and claws become natural weapons. Their damage die is 1d6, and the damage type depends on which weapon you use. Tail does bludgeoning, Teeth do piercing, and Claws do slashing.
  • You can go four times as long without food as a normal person, and you only need to drink one gallon of water per two weeks. Being in a hot climate does not affect your need for water, and your time without food is further doubled when in a cold environment.
  • As a bonus action, you may expend one hit die and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll of the hit die + your Constitution modifier.
  • You are acclimated to hot weather and do not suffer any ill effects from Extreme Heat below 140F. You do, however, suffer disadvantage when resisting effects from Extreme Cold. Wearing Cold Weather Clothing negates both of these, but you must still make saving throws against Extreme Cold.
  • You are immune to the Sickness of Tarragon.
  • Any severed fingers or toes regrow after 24 hours, severed limbs regrow after 1 week. In order to use this ability, you must have eaten at least once in the past 24 hours.
Point Balance: 21 Points
Size: Medium
Speed: 30ft
Language: You know International and Yatiri, a dialect of Draconic.
Age: Yatiri mature around 10 years old, and live up to 80 years.
Physical Description: The Yatiri look like large, bipedal lizards. Their scales are typically not shiny unless they have recently bathed, something that doesn't happen often in the desert they inhabit. All Yatiri have a second stomach that, instead of storing food, often times stores raw Quintessence in order to produce their signature Dragon Breath. The organ is filled throughout the day as more and more Quintessence is slowly channeled into the organ. This organ is vestigial in many Yatiri, although plenty of them have a fully functioning second stomach. A rare few Yatiri also have wings, much like their Draconic forebearers.
Social Difficulty: 3. The Yatiri have had a difficult relationship with the other sentient species of Isan. The Yatiri can often be found as merchants far from their homeland of Tarragon. These groups often get along with other species well enough. Yatiri within Tarragon, however, often can be found raiding the surrounding lands or attacking caravans who have not paid for passage through their territory. The Yatiri also recently invaded Huvaria in revenge for the destruction of a holy artifact, something the invaded Humans were not even aware they were responsible for, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Because of this, the Social Difficulty for Huvarians is a 4 for Yatiri. For Malbud, whom they have a millennia-old blood feud with, this difficulty increases to 5.
