Maledicta (Mal-eh-dic-ta)

The Maledicta are the most numerous member species of the Malidictum Federation, and it's source of it's founding. The Maledicta are an extremely diverse species that are believed to have originated in another dimension or reality. Their own mythology supports this origin.   Many races find the sight of Maledicta extremely unsettling, if not down-right sanity threatening. It is unclear if this effect is due to their physiology, or some lingering magical impact to the species as a whole. Due to this effect, it appears that the Maledicta have a long tradition of using magical illusions and even technologically generated holograms to mask their appearance to appear like the sapient species they are dealing with. These illusions are intentionally flawed so that it doesn't appear that they are trying to be subversive or sneaky, but many species are skeptical of this approach. Nevertheless the Maledicta seem to find it effective in many first-contact or negotiation scenarios. There are many Neohuman expressions and magical or technological means available to bypass this illusory camoflage, which the Maledicta acknowledge and warn against in case of an extreme reaction.   The Maledicta are extremely long-lived and it is rumored that the Eye of Balor, the current High Magister, is nearly 7000 years old. There are no records of Maledicta dying of advanced age, only from accident, assault, or intention. Maledicta tend to be relatively thin and tall in appearance, although there are rare examples reported by other aliens of Maledicta that are both significantly smaller and vastly larger and varied in overall appearance. Many Maledicta appear to be covered in chitous plates or scales, and the number and arrangement of limbs is extremely variable. Little is know about Maledicta breeding practices, although there are many rumors that it is a complex magical process requiring large and horrible rituals and twisted alchemical processes.   A sample of un-hidden Maledicta are shown below:

Basic Information

Anatomy

Little is know about the anatomy of the Maledicta. It is believed that they are not carbon-based, and it appears that while they require respiration, they are able to easily breathe a much wider range of gases than the Human of Earth. Their apparently thin and unmuscular frames belie a surprising degree of strength, particularly for those Maledicta of a more tentacular persuasion.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

It is difficult to determine the range of senses the Maledicta have naturally, as it is reported that they are enchanted with supporting magics from even before birth, whatever form that may take. It is known that the Maledicta are capable of seeing the full visual spectrum of humans, and extending into the infrared. Maledicta can also sense much information from ambient magical fields and projections, and given time can likely utilize some combination of technology and magic to be able to perceived anything needed.

Naming Traditions

The naming conventions of the Maledicta, the primary member race of the Malidictum Federation, are closely tied to their magical abilities and the eldritch nature of their appearance. Maledicta names often reflect their powers or personality traits, and may include elements of Eldritch languages or concepts.   Maledicta names are typically composed of a given name, followed by a clan name, and then a personal suffix that denotes their particular magical abilities or traits. For example, a Maledicta named Vaelthorix of Pesht may have the suffix "Binder" to indicate their proficiency in containment and control magic.   Given names among the Maledicta often feature sounds that are difficult for other races to pronounce, reflecting their otherworldly nature. Clan names may also include sounds that evoke a sense of dread or fear in other races, in keeping with the Maledicta's appearance.   In some cases, Maledicta may also take on additional titles or honorifics as they gain power or status within the Malidictum Federation. These titles may reflect their accomplishments, their role within the Federation, or their magical abilities. For example, a particularly skilled Maledicta might be known as a "Master of the Void," while a leader of a college of study might hold the title of "High Explorator of the Hungry Dark."   Overall, the naming conventions of the Maledicta reflect their unique culture and their close ties to magic and eldritch powers. These names serve to both identify and differentiate individual Maledicta, as well as to convey information about their magical abilities and status within the Malidictum Federation.

Common Dress Code

Maledicta seldom wear clothes, prefering to use magical or technological arrangements to protect themselves from the environment or other threats. As most other species do prefer clothing, their illusions and masking often includes the appearance of clothing.
