Heart of Gaul

Studied & Penned by Elias Dods.

Introduction

The Heart of Gaul is a thing of fabled myth, from an age when dwarf and man still warred across Haven. Described as an immense Ruby, the heart is larger than most men and pulsates with a deep crimson glow. Legend says the massive stone was capable of calming the very earth as it raged and taming the molten blood that seeped up from its depths. The stone's power allowed the Udirkith to construct their ever-expanding network of underground tunnels that spanned their empire known as the Black Roads. These magical pathways allowed the Udrithi Empire to rapidly transport troops and supplies across their empire in mere days while also serving as mustering grounds for their large military.

Lost to History

The Heart of Gaul was believed lost or destroyed after the Battle of Lava Falls saw the collapse of Gaul's Keep by many historians. Since then, the Black Roads have become unpredictable and unmappable, entire sections appearing and disappearing under floods of molten rock. Few dare to travel in the Underkingdom since the demise of its caretakers, and the web of tunnels has fallen into ruin where only foul monsters and terrible machines dare to make their homes.

Otherworldly Power

The Heart of Gaul contains a deep, archaic power deep within its crystalline structure, giving it unprecedented control over molten rock encompassing the entirety of haven and even beyond. All of the bubbling molten rock flows northward towards the heart's resting place deep in the Throat of the World. Though historians and fools have put forth this as a residual effect of the heart's destruction, I instead point out the idiocy in such a belief. To think that only the mere remnant of such an item could create such a precise and continuous effect is as ridiculous as believing the sun chases the moon. The power of this artifact is so far beyond the understanding of mortal mages, and even the likes of the divine would struggle to grasp its secrets truly.

Mysterious Origins

Though Gaul is believed to be tied to the origin of the stone, no historical record exists of its true origin, only the fabled legend of Gaul ripping the great stone from the earth and empowering its brilliance gives any clue to it's beginning. Knowing the Udirkith and their dark magics, it is undoubtedly a product of a foul work of Nhazetom.

Garkith Legend

The Garkiths tell a different tale of the origin of the Heart of Gaul. They speak of an ancient god of the mountains, a guardian of their people whose heart was ripped from its chest in brutal combat with Gaul during the birth of his empire. He would go on to use the heart to shatter the ancestral home of the mountain born people, casting it into the heavens as the moon: Katter.
