Magebreaker Cult Organization in Ravare | World Anvil

Magebreaker Cult (/mayge:brak:er / kult/)

Overview

The Magebreaker Cult is a powerful sect of occult practitioners employing some of the most vile Old Magics to ever exist on Marus. They were first founded in opposition to Caydon Rel's coming ascension and rose to prominence when a dark conclave completed a decade-long ritual resulting in the necromantic raising of a Depth Titan's corpse. This Elemental Monstrosity was their ultimate weapon and the pinnacle of their dark arts, with its mighty power they began their centuries-long war against Caydon Rel and his Relic Arts. They are the dreaded reapers that come to harvest whole islands of their populations; Where they abduct the young, the adults are butchered, and the strong are fed upon like prized cattle. They are the all-consuming maw... annihilation made manifest... their threat is a looming dread over all of Marus, both mortal and divine.

When the mighty rulers of the mountain that loomed at the heart of Death’s Basin commanded it to move, Krakoa's great corpse had no choice but to rise to its feet... One part mountain, one part crustacean, and one part serpent... its massive rotting underside was on a scale of its own, the stench wafting off it was like a palpable aura that turned the air for miles into death itself. Putrid blood rained down to stain the land and sea, marking the creature's passage as it lumbered off like a traveling earthquake in search of its next meal.

History

The exact events that culminated in the great Crone conclave that began the seed of the Magebreaker Cult are a mystery to even its highest members. All that is known is twelve ancient and powerful Crones, each a respective master of the Old Magics, gathered in secret beneath Death’s Basin in response to Caydon Rel's terrifying rise to power. They worked carefully over the next decade to remain undetected as they amassed suitable servants, prepared powerful Old Magics, and built the vast ritual circle required to resurrect the greatest of Depth Titans. Blightwaith finally rose for the first time three years after Caydon Rel became the Lord of Magic. It became the flagship in the now-public cult's open war against seemingly every Sophont on Marus.

Represented by a single length of unbroken chain where each link is composed of a different material. The unbroken chain of links represents the unity of their organization, while the myriad of materials symbolizes the various forms of ancient dark magics they all practice.

Tenants of Faith

Magebreakers are inducted into their cult from among the young aducted during their island harvests. These promising children are subjected to harrowing ordeals and intense indoctrination, resulting in a loyal zealous follower years later.

  1. Power Is Taken Not Given.
  2. You Cannot Trust The Relic Arts.
  3. Caydon Rel Must Be Eliminated.

There are no Gifted among the members of the Magebreakers. The group actively shuns the Relic Arts and willfully slaughters those among them who experiment with their Veils. They instead rely entirely on their grasp of the darkest Old Magics.

Membership and Accoutrements

Members of the Magebreaker Cult are known simply as Magebreakers and are often easily recognized. They have a propensity for body modification and prefer to embed the various lengths of chain, used to denote their power and station within the group, into their very own flesh. Powerful members of this Cult are known to be horrifically modified or even mutrated beyond their weak humanoid shell. Almost all Magebreakers prefer to dress in some fashion of simple linen covering; while some wear elaborate clothing produced from the spoils of their victories.
