Coastal Saffron Species in Ravare | World Anvil

Coastal Saffron

A rare crop that can only be grown along the shores of Solith.

Introduction

Native to Solith, the Coastal Saffron is in fact not a true species of Saffron but was named such because of its similar appearance and strong flavor. It was grown along the shores of the Solemn Expanse for many years before the Fall of Lady death ruined most agricultural endeavors in the Expanse. What little that is currently farmed can be sold for an extremely high price.

Shorewater Growth

The most complicated process in successfully growing Coastal Saffron its intense requirement of Shorewater, a mixture of salt water from the Black Sea and the silt from the shore. Requiring nearly 40 gallons of the mixture for a single harvest this crop is far more labor intensive than most crops increasing its value immensly.

Usages

Ritualized Consumption

Starting with the First Men, Coastal Saffron has been used in various ritualized dishes. It was believed, and often still is today, that consumption of the spice can lead to greater awareness of your surroundings to both the mundane and magical. This belief may be what lead to the original crop lands built on the shore of the Jagged Expanse.

As a Spice

Its flavor has been described as Saffron-esque (FIX THIS) but far less subtle leading to it requiring less to season a meal. It is primarily used in sauces rather than in the preparation of meats or vegetables.
