5e Character Background Ideas

Player characters should not be natives from Rakvalinor: a big part of the fun is exploring the unknown. A character from any material plane with elves could potentially sail "West" and reach Rakvalinor, but the following are some suggestions:

The Flanaess

Gary Gygax's original world of Greyhawk.

Elves in the Flanaess

  • The Faerie Kingdom of Celene
  • The Free Town of Highfolk
  • Gnomes in the Flanaess

  • The contested lands of the Flinty Hills
  • The comparatively peaceful Kron Hills, adjacent to the Faerie Kingdom of Celene
  • Dwarves in the Flanaess

  • The wealthy Kingdom of the Iron Hills
  • The scattered clans of the Lortmil Mountains, adjacent to the Faerie Kingdom of Celene
  • Orcs in the Flanaess

  • The Orcish Empire of the Pomarj is far from defeated, but the empire has been rebuffed in recent campaigns against its neighbors in Celene and Lortmil, and many ambitious orcs have gone looking for glory elsewhere.
  • Tieflings in the Flanaess

  • The Empire of Iuz produces many tieflings, but the strict religious hierarchy of Iuz is not a pleasant place, and those who have an opportunity to escape generally take it.

    Golarion

    The young world of Pathfinder.

    Elves in Golarion

  • The secretive elven nation of Kyonin
  • The Ekujae elves of the wild Mwangi Expanse
  • Gnomes in Golarion

  • The gnomish city of Brastlewark is located within the borders of the Empire of Cheliax.
  • Dwarves in Golarion

  • The city of Highhelm in the Five Kings Mountains was built on the surface where the dwarves first saw sunlight, when they migrated from their home deep in the Darklands, during the Quest For Sky.
  • Orcs in Golarion

  • The orcs of Golarion were driven from their home in the subterranean Darklands to the surface by the dwarves. Many now live in the wilderness of the Hold of Belkzen.
  • Tieflings in Golarion

  • The infernal empire of Cheliax gives birth to many tieflings, although they are treated with the same intolerance there as with most of Golarion.
  • Golarion

    Khorvaire

The high fantasy world of Eberron.

    Elves in Khorvaire

  • The ancient elf nation of Aerenal, ruled by the undead Undying Court.
  • The young half-elf nation of Valenar and the dragonmarked half-elves of House Lyrandar, who construct and sail the best ships in Khorvaire.
  • Gnomes in Khorvaire

  • The gnomish nation of Zilargo, known for its diplomacy and massive Library of Korranberg.
  • Dwarves in Khorvaire

  • The dwarven clans of the Mror Holds
  • The dragonmarked dwarves of House Kundarak, whose mastery of securing and protecting valuable items has led to their dominance of the banking trade on Khorvaire.
  • Orcs in Khorvaire

  • The dragonmarked orcs of House Tharashk are renowned prospectors, bounty hunters, and inquisitives, originally from the Shadow Marches.
  • Tieflings in Khorvaire

  • The barbarian Carrion Tribes of the Demon Wastes consider tieflings to be blessings from the demon gods they worship, but the harsh conditions and violent politics of the region drive many tieflings away once they achieve the power to escape.
