Norta

One of The Old Gods of Quel.

The god of both storms and calm days, Norta is favored by messengers, sailors, and travelling merchants – those who rely on good weather for their livelihood. Norta cares for all creatures that fly and often uses doves as messengers to her faithful. Manifestations of Norta in the material plane often appear as a bird or winged humanoid. She is perhaps the god that has most often visited our plane in the past as she is responsible for delivering messages. As with the other Old Gods, however, no such messages have been received from Norta in the last 30 years.

News travels in many ways across Arathel. For example, small villages may get their news from traveling peddlers or merchants. However, in the larger towns and cities, the common folk learn of events occurring abroad from the Bards of Norta, an organization dedicated to passing information between nations across the continent. These Bards compose songs that capture wars, small conflicts, deaths of high ranking leaders, etc. that they have either witnessed or received information about directly from another Bard of Norta. In the past, several rulers attempted to control or manipulate the Bards so that the news passed to the populace in their countries would be to their liking. The Bards of Norta sidestepped much of this manipulation by adding a tenet to their Bardic Oath, which forbids them from transmitting news to the populace about events within the kingdom where they are located; in other words, the Bards of Norta act as a foreign news service and leave local news to others.

Another less common form of news transmission, although more targeted, are Norta's Doves. These doves are renowned for their ability to return to their home after delivering a message to a location they have visited before. The most talented of these birds are highly prized because they can be trained to travel to a location of choice from several trained locations. These birds are highly prized and their use is limited primarily to rulers and high-ranking religious organizations. Places of worship dedicated to Norta often have impressive rookeries stocked with Norta's Doves.
