Their researchers commandeered the tallest of those trees for their laboratory. The Lightning Tree is the result, a dizzyingly tall structure that rises above even the tallest trees of the surrounding forest. It's shaped to channel aetheric lightning down through the "veins" of petrified trees into elaborate batteries that somehow maintain the aether's lightning nature. There's no more efficient energy source in the Eastern Front.- The Immortal Scribe, aka "Jack"
Purpose / Function
Ninja poisoners, smiths, druggists, and even healers come here to work dangerous and intractable materials. The building's unique construction makes it possible to work with stable, consistent lightning-natured aether, something the Western Range engineers scoffed at as impossible when the Tree was being built.
Architecture
The Lightning Tree is a beautiful mixture of the organic and the man-made, the aetheric and the technological. The overall impression is, indeed, of a tree--albeit one without leaves. Long vertical stripes of brown and red petrified wood run from the "branches" all the way down into the base, where the aether storage tanks are. Between the stripes are carefully angled slabs of pebbled tan concrete.
