Citation: Patriotism and Warfare
Patriotism and following a leader may be linked, but they may also be separate. One can be patriotic, yet disagree with the leadership of one's realm. Equally, following a leader, especially mindlessly, may not be patriotic. Danger lurks around the corner if a leader claims that not following them is unpatriotic. A realm is at risk of crumbling if a poor leader is followed without due care and attention. Disintegration is inevitable if its people no longer feel patriotic. Leaders must therefore ensure that obedience is not being used to cover deeper issues. In warfare, a patriotic army is a force to content with, but will abandon a weak leader if protecting their home is at stake. A forceful leader may command obedience and conformity, but patriotism is an alignment, an emotional attachment and an invisible link. It can unite. The question is who will they unite behind, and who will they stand against?
