Azachet

Azachet was a Kyadd whose life spanned before and after the founding of Qal'ath at 350BFD. While already known within scientific circles that year, her reputation, bravery and intelligence spread after her inclusion in Findat's team that investigated The Nectar Glen when Shevezz City's water supply was threatened.

Meaning of the Name

Azachet is a Rarshk name, and there are no indications she ever took a more Common Tongue/Parànti alternative name. Its meaning is made up of two parts:
  • Azal: meaning "blue"
  • Chet: meaning "skies" or "sky"
and it is likely she was so named due to the colour of her eyes.

Pronunciation

Aza:[Ç]et   There are no "silent" letters in Azachet, so the only point of discussion is the "ch" element.   Understanding that not every person spoke more than one language, she accepted a hard "ch" and a "sh" for Chet.   However, the correct pronunciation is a soft growl, or slight "gargle".

Appearance Notes

  • Eyes: "Desert Sky Blue", Round Pupils, indicating a family line that spent more time in the caves of Sablesand than hunting outdoors.
  • Claws: Yes, usually retracted. This showed that she never doubted her heritage, despite being adopted as a Shevezzi Citizen later in life.
  • Face: Tiger-like, not Cat-like. (Contrast this to Farynna).

Fighting for Recognition

A zoologist, Azachet had had to work hard for over a décanà, or ten years, before her knowledge and approach was accepted by those with influence in the Queendom of Shevezz. A Kyadd of Sablesand descent, she had camped outside of the City’s wide-open back wall and acquired day passes for weeks to peruse the visitors’ libraries.

Persistence and Acceptance

Eventually, she was granted weekly passes, then a month's semi-residence permit landed unexpectedly at the entrance to her tent one day. The message-bearer was shocked when the usually-stoic Kyadd broke down in tears. On many occasions, citizens had advised her that feline species had it easier at Béjaiber'ghas, and each time she had said she was no trader, but wanted to study. Responding to the message-bearer, Azachet explained that the permit was a sign that, finally, she was being accepted as a normal part of Shevezzi life.

Persistence to Permanence

That permit also granted her access to the Level One research complex, free writing materials and the chance to submit a work to the Centre of Natural Understanding for publishing consideration. Her precisely one hundred and thirty-nine sheet thesis on the ecosystem of Sablesand, including surviving on mostly food without water and the measures the city could take against sandstorms won her a prize, instant entry into the CNU and a permanent place of residence in the city.

Paradox, Not Contradiction

Azachet was something of a paradox to many who encounter her. She was gentle with a wry, sometimes biting, sense of humour. A recognised Zoologist in the Queendom of Shevezz, yet trained to fight with a Rzarchprl and kept her claws sharp for the purposes of combat and hunting. She was compassionate, but not above fighting and, if necessary, killing in the defence of the weak.   She did not see this as displaying contradictions, but treated each situation as she saw fit, knowing it could cause confusion for others.
Shenzàn turned to face the orange-and-black Kyadd with an appraising eye. Azachet confused her - she was clearly of strong Sablesand stock, arguably as strong as her, yet had joined them with more books than weapons.

Not a Normal Rzarchprl

An aspect of Azachet, which did not become apparent until 350BFD, was that her traditional Kyadii weapon, the Rzarchprl, had unusual additions.

Decorative Metalwork

Rzarchprls were (and still are) a traditional - and often brutal - weapon of torture and death. The teeth and claws are used to tear flesh, while more sinister Kyadii used the sharp end to slowly bleed victims to death.   Azachet's by contrast incorporated decorative silver-coloured leaves at both ends of the weapon. There were no known silver mines in Sablesand at that time, so the metal was more likely to be a form of steel, perhaps layered with a silver sheen from a plant or shelled insect. As Azachet had felt something of an outlier, even though not an outcast, it is likely she learned metalworking art by experimentation.

Fire Rock Orb

At the other end was a perfectly spherical black and red orb, which was held in place by three silver leaves. While Azachet never spoke of its origins, it had the appearance of Fire Rock, those formed from the Fyrousii and capable of retaining heat for extended periods of time. Yet, at the age Azachet would have made this weapon, she would not have ventured that far - if she ever did.   While she was a Shevezzi citizen for over half of her life, it must never be forgotten that the Kyadii had both warriors and shamanii, battlers and healers. While the origin of the stone may be unclear, its purpose or function is more easily discerned as mystical.

Chronicler's Note (Appended by Tac-Clip):
Another theory revolves around the personal nature of each Rzarchprl. Most Kyadii maintain their weapon, but do not necessarily upgrade them. As it's part of a rite of passage, emotional weight is given to these tools of war. In Azachet's case, she may have reworked it upon becoming a Shevezzi citizen, or simply adopted extra techniques learned so that the Rzarchprl evolved with her personal growth.

Self-awareness

But Azachet was mostly aware of her own weaknesses and knew that fighting was not her strongest trait. She almost always wore Shevezzi laboratory clothes and these hindered her in combat.   But it was not only her physical limitations she purposefully kept track of. She was an expert in many aspects of Zoology, and that overlapped with many other scientific pursuits. While on Findat's Mission, she struggled interpersonally with [Veman], a biologist, but almost always deferred to his judgement in matters relating to plantlife.   Though she struggled to hide her feelings, she always attempted to remain teachable, believing that learning was the only path to improvement - for her and for society as a whole.

The only child-cub offspring of her parents, Azachet had to fight for respect. Initially, that meant literally. Later, when she shunned hunting and fighting in favour of study and enquiry, she had to intellectually fight to remain part of the clan.
