Scant

The range of dialects spoken by humans after the fall are collectively called "Scant" or "Scantongue". A hodge-podge amalgamation of pre-Cataclysm languages or Old Tongue , Scant is full of slang terms, portmanteaus, abbreviations, and all manner of linguistic drift. The necessity of communication between survivors of every former culture created a simple, straightforward language built for practical, everyday use. Its script is a syllabic bastardization of the most common alphabet in Old Tongue, reduced to only the bare bones characters. Numbering less than twenty, the "letters" of Scant are easy to learn and utilize, yet literacy is rare, especially within younger generations. While all commonly spoken language is named Scant, any two speakers may have wildly differing dialects, so disparate from one another that they can barely comprehend one another.
