410. The Docks

Southside of the river

The Merchant District’s waterfront contains both working and abandoned docks, although there are more of the former than latter. Here is where boats load and unload their cargo ready to be transported to warehouses and places of business around Arkham.   Lucky Clover Cartage Co. {412} owns the Old Saltonstall Wharf across from their Commercial Warehouses {411}. Of the wharves in this stretch, Arkham Wharf, Old Jenkin Wharf, and Union Wharf are still worked, while the Old Brown Wharf and Federal Wharf are more or less abandoned and are half-falling into the river, while the rest are simply decaying away. The street between the docks and the warehouses is crowded and unlit at night and, stuffed with junk and litter, it resembles more a forbidding alley than a street. Hoboes are known to make temporary homes here as they travel through Arkham looking for work.   Within the abandoned dock structures, the old floors are treacherous, and a person’s foot is liable to go, perhaps even plunging the unwary into the water below. With the dark of the moon, criminals make use of this waterfront to transport their ill-gotten gains, or else rid themselves of those folks who have crossed them. Unweighted bodies drift down river to wash up elsewhere.   For the most part, by day, these docks are alive with commerce; although their heyday is long past, thanks to the railroad. The stevedores still ply their trade—theirs is a close community of brotherhood and alliances.
