411. Commercial Warehouses

North of W Main Street, from West to Garrison

Opposite the wharves on the riverside and on the north side of West Main Street, from South West Street to South Garrison Street, is the heart of commercial warehousing operations. Constructed in the early 19th century, most of these great brick Georgian-styled warehouses have stood for a century. On the river-facing side of most, watermarks (five feet above ground) can be seen on the sides of these buildings—a painted reminder of the 1888 flood.   Most of the warehouses store goods and materials for Arkham businesses (such as Gleason’s Department Store {427}) or else for public works, although a small handful can be hired for temporary storage by anyone with the necessary funds. Lucky Clover Cartage Co. {412} recently leased a larger, second unit two blocks east at the Old Warehouses {436} as their first warehouse has proved insufficient for its bootleg liquor operation. Having two warehouses near, yet spaced out, in the district affords some flexibility in balancing both a legitimate “cover” business and a criminal one.
