Conscription Pits

The Conscripts, also called the Dead men Walking, are a legislative Anomaly. The Union uniformely disallowes slavery of any Humanoid race of a "certain amount of Intelligence", but despite this Lawful humanitarian stance there is one loophole that has since established itself. Conscripts are self-indentured servants of the state, that "willingly" sign a contract in the so called "Conscription Pits" for a independently variable Amount of time. During this time they are provided baseline food and housing even if in very miniscule quality, but in exchange they are provided with certain law extending benefits, such as frozen interest rates and tax-free wages that are imediately cinfiscated to pay for watherver had forced them into this squalid life. Conscripts are put to work in the worst or most dangerous Jobs with little to no rights to teir person or well-being. Normally criminals and Ex-war slaves are often put in there but also indebted and homeless are often found within, as is the rare aspiring young noble which did a big No-no. Trying to escape is without exception a death sentence and is rigerously enforced as this is the last chance where the undisereables of the Union can provide some kind of use, or alternatively simply be rid of.
