The Abyss (/ɑːˈbɪs/ a-BIS)

The Infinite Layers of the Abyss was the birth place of the demons, a chaotic evil universe unto itself with uncountable layers of infinite variety connected haphazardly. Although a highly chaotic place the nature of the plane remained fairly constant: a violent, malevolent place where the strong survived on the backs of the weak, the weak conspired to overthrow the strong, alliances only lasted while convenient, and the landscape itself tortured the mind and body of all who dared to pass.
Ah, the infinite wonders of the Abyss. If there's anything you don't like, you'll find it here.
— A tan'ari saying

Layers

The number of layers in the Abyss was unknown and perhaps unknowable. Each layer had its own characteristics, which were as varied as the demons themselves. All types of terrain, atmosphere, weather, gravity, and material composition were represented in the myriad layers. Some examples were:
  • Elementally-Dominant (Air, Earth, Fire, Water)
  • Battleground
  • Desert
  • Glacier
  • Hellscape
  • Mountainous
  • Negative-dominant
  • Normal (Similar to the Material Plane
  • Ocean
  • Swamp
  • Volcanic
The following list attempts to show some of the more well-known layers of the abyss.
Layer 1 - Pazunia
Known as the Plain of Infinite Portals, pazunia was a barren wasteland of scorching winds under a relentless red sun. Massive pits dotted the surface that led to many other layers. Most notable, this layer had pits leading to the 4th layer, The Grand Abyss.
Layer 4 - The Grand Abyss
Also known as the Blood Rift, this layer was a bottomless chasm that started from Pazunia and reached almost every single layer of the abyss via portals or gates.
Layer 13 - Blood Tor
This layer consisted of a vast ocean of red waters. It was the realm of Umberlee, The Wavemother, who dwelt in the depths of the red ocean.
Layer 23 - The Iron Wastes
This icy layer was a vast expanse of glaciers, mountains, and ruins buried in miles-deep ice, constantly battered by an extremely cold and violent blizzard. It was the realm of the demon lord Kostchtchie, the Prince of Wrath
Layer 45-47 - Azzagrat
Also called the Triple Realm, Azzagrat spanned the 45th, 46th, and 47th layer of the abyss. It was the realm of the demon lord Graz'zt, the Dark Prince
Layer 65 - The Demonweb Pits
This layer was an immense network of webs that folded on themselves to form a single giant spider web. All structures such as buildings and ships hung from the webs as if caught by them. Deep within the web were dungeons, and far beneath those lay the bottomless pits where Lolth dwelt.
Layer 88 - The Gaping Maw
This layer consisted of a vast continent covered in jungles surrounded by an endless ocean and brine flats. It was the realm of Demogorgon, the Prince of Demons
Layer 113 - Thanatos
This layer was a land of ruin and death, with sterile heaths, black forests, and desolate mountains filled with ruins and scattered tombs, inhabited by a variety of undead. The demon lord Orcus, the Prince of Undeath ruled this layer.
Layer 176 - Hollow's Heart
This layer contained the realm of the demon lord Fraz-Urb'luu, the Prince of Deception. His realm had once covered the entire layer, but was imprisoned for some time and most of the layer had become a featureless flat expanse of white dust.
Layer 222 - Shedaklah
Also known as the Slime Pits this layer was the realm of the demon lord Juiblex, Prince of Slimes, and Zuggtmoy, Queen of Fungi. The realm was a bubbling fetid swamp, covered with oozes, molds and slimes that formed strange organic shapes, all under a mud-brown sky overcast with green clouds.
Layer 422 - Death Dells
Also known as the Seeping Woods, this layer consisted of an endless hunting ground of barren hills and ravines, with a few structures and scattered signs of civilization. It was ruled by Yeenoghu, the Gnoll Lord
Layer 600 - The Endless Maze
The realm of Baphomet, the Prince of Beasts. It was an infinite maze inhabited by minotaurs.
