Engelbert II (ing-gell-burt)

Written by Asa M Jacobson

Overlord Engelbert Sarcho, Son of Engelbert I (a.k.a. Engelbert the Deceiver)

INTRODUCTION

Engelbert Sarcho was the 7th Overlord of the Kingdom of Archia, and the penultimate ruler of the line of Sarcho. His influence was rather weak, and he maintained a difficult kingdom of strife during his long one-hundred forty-three year reign. However, his historical legacy is very important, and many historians note him as the savior of the Archian Kingdom during The First Magic War of Abeon. His shrewd decision making and military strategy during the global conflict of his days single handedly saved Archia from the fate of Orsolon and Meluhur, giving him a place among the great kings of Archia.

EARLY LIFE

Engelbert was the oldest son of King Engelbert I, who reigned over the growing trade of Archia during the twelfth century of Abeon. Engelbert was trained to be a fighter from a young age, and many prophesied that he would be the first great conqueror in the line of Sarcho. However, Archia would not expand its borders until well after Engelbert II, over five hundred years later during the great reign of Elferun Sireron during the 18th century. Regardless, Engelbert was groomed to play a major part in the growing tensions between Tsonlar and the middleton human states of battlewrath.

RISE TO POWER

Engelbert I died in his home at Duswik during the year 1260 2p, at the young age of just one hundred and four years old. This thrust the already rebellious Archia into chaos, as the only heir apparent was Engelbert, who was a mere thirty-nine. However, the tensions were halted in 1262 with the sudden invention and discovery of Alchemy by Elliot Gould in Tsonlar. Engelbert fueled the outrage against the new currency-overriding technology in order to distract from his own power struggle, and managed to rally his people under the banner of hostility against the Kingdom of Tsonlar. When their neighbors in Meluhur began arming the GoldHammer Legions with new magic-crafted weaponry, Engelbert feld poised and ready to fulfill the prophecy concerning the rise of Archia, and begun preparations for a war against Tsonlar.

WAR BEGINS

In 1271, Engelbert began blocking trade in the West Seas through the Orsolon port at Gazelli, cutting the Arvenon trade completely in half. Despite angry cries from Tsonlar, Engelbert kept the blockade until the turn of the war in 1278 2p. Orsolon then joined the war, hoping to reconquer lost lands in Lu'rain and Relloun. In 1273, the Dwarves of Meluhur attacked and conquered the pivotal trading city of Ingerford, effectively siezing control of all southern trade routes, freeing Engelbert to deploy his forces southward to attack the Arvenon capital of Lu'rain. Despite initial success, Engelbert quickly pulled back his forces as the Orsolon Army began to stall near the city, sensing disaster was near. This was the first of Engelbert's intuitive moves of genius during the span of the war, as just six sets later (72 days), an army of valkyrie wiped out the invading army, sending them reeling back to Orsolon.

A NEW ALLIANCE

With tides quickly changing and the fortunes of the Anti-Alchemist League fading fast, Engelbert snatched the opportunity to meet with the Tsondalian King, Manuel VII. In a move that changed the fate of Abeon for future generations, the Kingdom of Archia switched sides in the war, instead fighting with Tsonlar and Hofslond for the final 22 years. Engelbert promised to 'reslove' the issue of the GoldHammer dwarves so that Manuel and his forces could focus on obliterating Orsolon. In a plan that crippled the Meluhur dwarves beyond recovering, Engelbert's full force of twelve thousand tricked the dwarven king Glamden into joining their armies, before turning and destroying every last dwarf. Manuel VII honored the alliance, and never sent his forces into Archia, instead bearing down hard on Orsolon. Engelbert proceeded to sieze the Orsolon trade from Gazelli and forced the Anti-Alchemist League, which he had started, into surrender.

DEATH AND LEGACY

With peace finally achieved in 1300 2p>3p, Engelbert focused his efforts back to strengthening the Archian position in Northern Abeon, sending scouts and troops to explore the unknown world of the peninsula. His reign was cut short however, when he was murdered in his bed one fateful night in 1403 3p. His sickly son, Engelbert III reigned in his place. Despite a rather unmemorable reign and spineless rule, Engelbert II is touted as the savior of early Archia, and many still believe him to be one of the most shrewd leaders in all of Abeonic history. He is responsible for the common Tsondalian phrase: "As spineless as an Archian" because of his ease of betrayal of his own alliance.
