Alchemy (Al-kim-ee)

DISCOVERY

The Scientific Technology of Alchemy was discovered by the Arvenon in Tsonlar in the early third period. One of the royal family members, Elliot Gould, accidentally turned a bag of wood into a sack of gold by using a series of spells that were not the ones he meant to use. After realizing what he stumbled upon, Elliot wrote down the combination and set up a laboratory in the castle in Ingerford. The other types of Alchemy were discovered by his descendants, most notably Sidney Gould, who discovered the science of Toxin Brewing.

ECONOMIC VALUE

Not many have access to Alchemy, only those scientists who were deemed educated enough to practice in Elliot Gould's laboratory in the royal castle. Though a valuable technology, Alchemy also presented a massive problem to the rulers of Tsonlar- the economic trade. The coinage of Tsonlar, Hofslond, Archia, and Fondalar were all of the rarest resources, silver, bronze, and gold. However, with this new science, those coins would lose all value in the area. As a solution, Tsonlar institued a new currency in the land, four different valued coins made of gem substances, rather than metal. Their square shape and rare substance made them extremely valuable everywhere, enriching the kingdom further. As a further measure against inflation, the rulers heavily regulated Alchemists, limiting the ability to use such a magic to only those few in Gould's laboratory. However, this did not stop smart scientists not allowed into the castle to learn the art or similar sciences on their own and sell their talents on the black market.

MILITARY VALUE

The economic value of metal transformation is quite obvious, but its military advantage is quite a bit more powerful. The ability to turn nature substances and natural resources into more valuable metals can supply an army with plenty of unbreakable weapons and armor. Alchemy can also be used as a weapon itself, as many warlocks and powerful beings do. The ability to turn things like bark and tree cones into metal objects creates a deadly weapon out of everything everywhere. People who use this effectively include Rayven the Undying and Lunist Ward, the Outcast.

SUBSETS OF ALCHEMY

The three types of Alchemy each have their own sets in themselves, creating a diverse economy of workers within the scientific field of Tsonlar.

METAL ALCHEMY – The use of turning various objects of nature into metal.
Platinum Alchemy – Pinecones, needles, rocks, leaves, nature debris.
Gold Alchemy – Iron, stone, limestone, other minerals.
Silver Alchemy - Wood

BREWING ALCHEMY - The Use of Mixing Nature Substances into Valuable Potions
Poison Brewing - Mushrooms and tree sap
Toxin Brewing - Deep earth substances, like clay and dark minerals

DIVINE ALCHEMY - The Search for an Eternal Elixir
Eternal Alchemy - Still being developed, the scientists here are searching for a life extending elixir.

DISTILLING

Metal Alchemy can be used by a mere spell casting, but brewing alchemies require much more sophisticated equipment. Among these are very special distillers, once used for brewing alcohol. Once modified, these distillers
are carefully placed into labs and placed in a safe container until in use. Typically a gem called a robisphere, a rare red jewel mined from the mountains in The Deep, is placed beneath the distiller and powers it using its magic fire properties. After only three or four brewing periods, the robisphere is diminished and must be replaced. This singular item makes distilling toxic potions extremely expensive and labor intensive. Such an art is hard to master and expensive, making brewers few and far between, but all extremely rich, especially those that sell their mixes on the black market to other countries.

TOXIN ALCHEMY
Although many believe Alchemy is the research and science surrounding metallurgy and metal transformation, this is merely one of three branches the Arvenonian people discovered. The three branches are Metal Transformation, Brewing, and Divine Properties. The most dangerous of these is brewing, because so much of it is creating acid-like potions which can be used in war and military advancements. Protective gear was created and is required for any poison alchemist, but even with the gear, the nature of such technology is pure toxins, and thus it is still extremely unstable and dangerous. Typically only the daredevils and adrenaline junkies take interest in such a science.
