The Ice Caps

Prakaethion is capped on both the south and north poles with thick, but relatively small, ice caps. These are both roughly 700 miles in diameter on average, but have outcroppings that are much larger, including the minor continent of Coshath on the Northern Ice Cap, near Acuphera. The Sourthern Ice Cap has three minor continents, Notea, Kubia, and Ohora, which are relatively close by. Other than these nearby continents, outcrops and tiny islands just off of the coast, the ice caps represent the two largest landmasses on Prakaethion that are not home to any peoples. The closest either ice cap gets to a permanent population are small hunting parties that make excursions onto them from Coshath in the north or Notea in the south to hunt for some of the large game that reside there during the summer.
During the winter, each of the ice caps is shrouded in the dark of night for roughly 2 months. During these months, the icecaps themselves actually grow, with particularly cold months causing the icecaps to actually join with nearby islands, including the Southern Ice Cap joining with Notea in the most extreme cases. During such winters, there can be an influx of dangerous creatures from the ice caps to Notea.
The creatures that live on the Northern Cap include penguins, walruses, akhults, and frost worms. White dragons are also rumored to inhabit the island, though some consider these to simply be tall tales.
On the Southern Cap there are Polar Bears, Seals, and Linnorms. There are also legends of the Adlet people living here, though they have never been seen.
Both are home to various migratory birds, and wolves and foxes who have adapted for the regions. The seas surrounding the caps are home to many of the largest aquatic mammals in the world.
