Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Hogwarts trains mages from England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland starting at the age of 13. Mages of all blood-types are accepted, but are required to pass standardized exams to keep their positions at Hogwarts. The last two years at Hogwarts are particularly grueling and difficult, and require the mage to have enough raw magical capacity in order to complete their training there. As such, it's rare for muggle-borns to continue to the last two years due to them having lower magical levels.

Structure

Hogwarts is headed by a Headmaster/Headmistress with a Deputy Headmaster/Headmistress. Below them are four teachers designated as Heads of Houses. All teachers report directly to the Head (sometimes through the Deputy Head), and all support staff report directly to the Deputy Head.

History

Founded in 997 by Godric Gryffindor of England, Helga Hufflepuff of Ireland, Rowena Ravenclaw of Scotland, and Salazar Slytherin of Wales.

Education

Hogwarts is a seven-year institute.
  1. In the first year, students are boarded together in Prime House, and have special classes of Flying, Magical Theory, Latin, and a Study Hall where they are taught skills to succeed at Hogwarts and are guided about the area. Prime House does not have a Quidditch Team, but they primarily manage the school's festivals and events, especially the arts events. At the end of the first year, students sit the WOMBAT to test their basic magical and muggle knowledge. These scores are considered for placement into houses the following year, with Ravenclaw having the highest requirement and Slytherin following. Academics focus on incantation staff magic.
  2. In the second year, students are sorted into the four main houses - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Second-years and third-years respectively share general dorms with all of their classmates of the same sex. They are given permission to travel unescorted to the adjoining village of Hogsmeade, and take on three new electives of their choosing. In addition, each house has special House Classes to teach skills and advice specific to their house. Second years may also join their house Quidditch Teams through tryouts. Academics focus on implemental staff magic.
  3. In the third year, students are assigned to a fourth-year Prefect of their house, who helps them with their studies and social navigation. At the end of the third year, students sit the GOAT to test their general magical knowledge and house skills. After this exam, students are offered Resorting if they feel they do not belong in their previously designated house. Academics focus on implemental scepter magic.
  4. In the fourth year, students are assigned smaller dorms with one or two of their classmates, which can be voluntarily picked. Select students are chosen as Prefects in their houses (a boy and girl from each house), to mentor third-year students. Fourth-years can become Captains of various teams and groups on campus. Academics focus on spelled scepter magic.
  5. In the fifth year, students are assigned to a sixth-year Prefect of their house, who helps them with their studies and social navigation. At the end of the fifth year, students sit the OWL to test their intermediate magical knowledge and house skills. After this exam, students are offered Resorting if they feel they do not belong in their previously designated house. Academics focus on spelled wand magic.
  6. Students must be accepted into the sixth year at Hogwarts, as there is a grade and power requirement for advanced courses. In the sixth year, students are assigned individual dorms, or else are allowed to live in the adjoining village of Hogsmeade. One boy and one girl from the entire year are chosen as Junior Head Boy and Junior Head Girl; though uncommon, these students do not have to be Prefects. Sixth year Prefects are assigned to fifth-year students as mentors within their house. Sixth-years can drop any courses that they do not wish to study at the advanced level. Academics focus on non-verbal wand magic.
  7. In the seventh year, students sit the NEWT to test their advanced magical knowledge. Many seventh-year students take internships with their chosen profession, and spend most of their time networking or studying independently. Academics focus on wandless magic.
