Bodhi,
Even the wisest and more learned of adults finally realize that sometimes the best answer to a child’s question is simply, “Because it just is.” Why is the sky blue and not red? Why don’t fish talk? Why do the machines try to kill us? Oh, we could go through all of the science and come up with all kinds of interesting theories and causes and events. We can figure out how the universe works. But the real answer to the real “why” behind the question sometimes just has to boil down to, “because, it just is.”
We can’t say the machines rebelled. We can lie to ourselves, but deep down, we know that’s not the answer. We can’t say the machines are evil any more than a child can blame a chair for his stubbed toe. Eventually, we grow up and realize that we can’t use that excuse anymore.
The machines should be winning. They can sense humans, target them, and kill them in one shot before our slow neural impulses even start to fire. They should be able to. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t. Why? Because. It just is.
Give my love to your mother,
MaMo
