Dragonborn

Born of dragons, as their name proclaims, the Dragonborn walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension.

A History of Rebellion

Shaped by ten draconic titans known as the Drakaris, Dragonborn originally were created as a slave race to serve the draconic titans and their lesser dragonkin. The Dragonborn toiled under the subjugation of the Drakaris for centuries until a group of warriors known as the Reskar banded the various clans together and rose up against the Drakaris. Striking back as a unified force the Dragonborn were able to kill seven of the Drakaris, forcing the final three to flee the realm of Portum.   Following their emancipation, the Dragonborn set to separate themselves in the realm of Portum from the rest of the humanoids. Free to live as they wish the Dragonborn ushered in a new era of prosperity and peace. The clans continued their treaty for 80 years, expanding their borders and creating the great capital city, Lindwyrm, that would become the center of culture in western Portum.   This peace was cut short, however, as a powerful cult known as the Eversworn fought to usher in the return of the final three Drakaris with the help of the remaining true dragons. The fight against the Everchosen and their dragon lords would last 200 years sowing destruction and chaos across western Portum. While the dragon lords would eventually be hunted down and defeated, scattering the Eversworn, the war would result in the total destruction of Lindwyrm and the fracturing of the various clans.    To this day the Dragonborn clans remain scattered, constantly vying against one another for resources, land or honor.

Self-Sufficient Clans

To any Dragonborn, the clan is more important than life itself. Dragonborn owe their devotion and respect to their clan above all else, even the gods. Each Dragonborn's conduct reflects on the honor of his or her clan, and bringing dishonor to the clan can result in expulsion and exile. Each Dragonborn knows his or her station and duties within the clan, and honor demands one maintains the bounds of that position.   A continual drive for self-improvement reflects the self-sufficiency of the race as a whole. Dragonborn value skill and excellence in all endeavors. They hate to fail, and they push themselves to extreme efforts before they give up on something. A Dragonborn holds mastery of a particular skill as a lifetime goal. Members of other races who share the same commitment find it easy to earn the respect of a Dragonborn.   Though all Dragonborn strive to be self-sufficient,  they recognize that help is sometimes needed in difficult situations. But the best source for such help is the clan, and when a clan needs help, it turns to another Dragonborn clan before seeking aid from other races—or even from the gods.   While the vibrancy and hues of scales often play an important role in determining clan leadership, tracing their lineage to a specific ancestral warrior, very few clans are homogenous in ancestral heritage creating a rainbow of denizens in each clan.

However, this does not typically manifest into a caste system in which a specific scale color is looked down upon and treated negatively by their fellow clansmen.

Colors

In the same manner as true dragons, Dragonborn are divided into a number of different scale colors. Although years of interbreeding have led to their outer colors becoming less vibrant or similiar, a Dragonborns true heritage remains strong in their bloodline effecting their natural abilities and natures. These colors fall into two categories, the chromatics and the metallics.
