General Summary
Welcome to Port Shimmerly!
The world is technically Faerun (the main D&D official setting), but in a very isolated area. It being in Faerun is mainly so if you like to have something specific you can tie your backstory to, you have the history of Faerun to work with. It won’t be much relevance to the campaign (probably), but Port Shimmerly is on a peninsula sort of halfway down the Sword Coast between Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate.
You are under the employ of the Port Shimmerly City Guard. This isn’t exactly the most prestigious organization; the city is newly established, and is bankrolled by the gentleman adventurer Baron Ivan Iverfort, who is willing to do whatever it takes to get people into his nascent baronry. He entices rich folks by offering them cheap land and incentives to open businesses in town. For those not fortunate enough to have thousands of gold to spend, he offers employment to almost anyone. Serf-like dock workers live in two Tenement buildings in town, and those with any ability are offered a job in the City Guard. As such, you can be a talented ruffian or a good-hearted adventurer and still find employment in town.
There are three divisions of the Port Shimmerly City Guard: The Brick Division (which deals with enforcement inside the city and is by far the most thuggish and corrupt group), The Bush Division (which deals with interactions with the forest and its denizens), and the Wayside Division (which is a more clandestine investigatory division). You can be involved in any of these divisions, but depending on your abilities, you may be suited for one in particular. (We’ll talk about it at Session 0.) No matter what division you end up in, you all live in The Barracks within the Guard Complex.
The amount of time you’ve been in town can be anywhere from a few days to about five years, but you all are starting at Level 3. We’ll go over character creation rules at Session 0, since we haven’t played together before, but all published content is theoretically available. The new Mordenkainen’s book isn’t readily available yet so don’t use that, although I may implement certain specific changes after a more thorough look (especially for genasi).
