Kraa'thom & Chelor
Lore
Thousands of years ago, two ancient celestial beings came together and created a pair of brothers to watch over Lient’roc: Kraa'thom and Chelor. The force of their arrival on this plane created a large crater-like lake in the forest (Kraalo). For a time, they lived and moved among the natives, casting their influence directly onto the people.
Kraa’thom had affinities for rivers, plants, the moon, stone, and the bubbling energy of new growth. Chelor had affinities for stars, oceans, caves, and the relationship between life and death. Both were more powerful at night than in the day.
Kraa’thom was immediately favored by the locals. His power of personality struck them, and his ability to bless crops and livestock was obviously very appreciated. Chelor had followers, too, often esoteric scholars and philosophers, but also many miners who worked to bring piter out of the caves. Both would use their divine touch to bless people with divine revelations, most often in the form of inventions. Creating useful objects, both magical and mundane, was something the brothers always shared, although the nature of the inventions were clearly differentiated.
The two lived in relative peace for a few hundred years, but eventually Chelor became bitterly jealous of his brother. The praise his brother received gave him more power, and Chelor resented that his followers had less fervor and lacked the skills to effectively proselytize. Little by little, the resentment turned to hatred. Chelor began plotting against his brother and his church, using the sharp wit of his own followers to formulate insidious schemes.
Kraa’thom attempted to simply ignore the fact that his brother was trying to destroy him for many years. Their relationship had always been tense, but Kraa’thom convinced himself that it was all relatively harmless. Chelor began accepting dark sacrifices to boost his power to try to oust his brother as the dominant deity, but before he could rise to the level he needed, Kraa’thom confronted him. What was meant to be a simple discussion turned into a cataclysmic divine brawl, ending with a final confrontation at their birthplace of Kraalo.
Kraa’thom’s strength was superior to Chelor’s, but the younger brother was much more cunning. The fight was well-matched. The finishing blow came after Chelor attempted to prey on his brother’s penchant for mortal women. Kraa’thom let go of his inhibitions and sealed Chelor beneath the caves. This banishment is known as the Fall of Chelor and he is said to be sealed in a chamber of the caverns, only accessible when one has lost all hope of escaping them.
Since then, neither god has been seen “in the flesh”. Manifestations of Kraa’thom are known to occur sometimes under the influence of Ibsen-cha. Before the Fall, both deities regularly had Avatars, mortals who were particularly drawn to each of them. They received divine power in specific ways. After the Fall, very few Avatars of Kraa’thom have been recorded, and none of Chelor.
Chelor is now said to be biding his time in a secret cavern that can only be found if you are hopelessly lost in the caverns, where the presence of Chelor may confront you. If you agree to sacrifice your own intentions and goals for your life and dedicate yourself to the service and rise of Chelor, he may see fit to use you in a very special role, a more powerful Avatar, to bring about the Chelor Dun, his apocalyptic reawakening.
Since the Fall of Chelor, the Chelu-kaan have been very isolated. Without the guidance of the two guardian deities, the forest became dangerous and few travelers had reason to come anyway.
