Game Setting At A Glance
Port Shimmerly: Town is a town located on the Sword Coast in between Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate. It exists on a peninsula that has rarely been explored due to its dangerous forests and extensive cave systems. The easiest way to get to the town is via boat.
It is a very new town, only established around 50 years ago. Big money patrons from Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate have invested heavily in the town, and have been making attempts to attract folks of all stations to move there and be a part of the fledgling city.
You may have been directly recruited by a noble family that runs your adventuring guild; you may have simply heard of the promise of new and unusual adventure in the city; or, there may be another reason you have come to Port Shimmerly. In any case, unless you are an aboriginal elf from the area, you find yourself on a boat to the new port.
Besides the fact that Port Shimmerly is brand new, you also know:
- The area is home to a sect of aboriginal elves known as the Chelu-ka. Because of the dangers of the forest in which they live, they have been heavily isolated from most “civilized” society. They are wary of outsiders but interested in the outside world, especially since many of the older elves have exhausted the physical exploration of their local scenes. See Chelu-ka for more information.
- The town has a reputation for violence. This isn’t unusual for a new town, as the law hasn’t been really upheld yet. Baron Ivan Iverfort owns the majority of the property in and surrounding the town, and employs a private mitilita that functions as the police in the town.
- If you can prove to be a valuable citizen to the town, Baron Ivan Iverfort will sell you land at a steeply discounted rate. He is able to do this through other wealthy individuals’ investment in the town that he is running. As such, if you prove to be of worth to the town, the cost of your stay during your initial visit will also be taken care of by the Baron.
- As a player, you’re more than welcome to play an aboriginal elf, but obviously in-depth discussion with me is required. Other information about the town will be revealed to you depending on your character.
