Physician

A good physician was difficult to find when voyaging, and to some, an unnecessary addition. Most doctors aboard ships were deemed valuable, and pirates that captured other ships usually left the doctor alive, capturing him so he could treat their men. Although physicians of the early 18th century weren't well versed in practical remedies (the theory of the four humors was still a popular one), they still tended to save lives regardless.

Also known as a Surgeon, he was responsible for the well being and generall upkeep of a crew's health. He would keep logs detailing sickness and diseases. During battles, he would hold himself up in an undistrubed area to deal with those who were injured as they were brought to him.

Doctors also were responsible for fumigating ships and making sure no sickness got off or on the ship.
