Carpenter
The Carpenter's job aboard a vessel involved the maintenance and repair of the wooden hull, yards, and masts of the ship. He worked under direction from the Bosun. He regularly made repairs to the hull using tar and oakum, keeping the vessel tight against leaks. He would also check for worms and make sure that the wood was sound before a voyage.
Often, the carpenter would be in the place of the surgeon, and perform amputations with his tools.
