Day of Roses

The Day of Roses is an old festival, originally celebrated by humans and brought to the Plains and Dread Forest when they settled here. Many elves now celebrate it, although their envisioning of it is quite different from the original. In its original form, it was intended to honor Lady Sune, the goddess of beauty, who also reigned over love. Some human cities hold that marriages performed during the festival are especially lucky, as they are blessed by the goddess, and many marriages of state have been performed during the second day of the festival. The wood elves version of the festival pays homage to the elven goddess of love, Hanali Celanil, who many half-elves view as another name of Lady Sune's.   The original event, still practiced in human-heavy areas such as Meloria or Bastion, was a 2-day celebration that takes place around mid-summer every year (approx. 34-35 Sune) and involves crowns of roses or other red flowers worn by unmarried people of age, sweet desserts, and an all-night performance of music, plays, dances, and other delights by entertainers, many of whom work all year preparing for the festival. The first day's festivities begin after the end of the normal working day, about 2-3 hours before sunset. Participants make flower crowns and the desserts of the festival, the most common being sugar-coated pastries or sugar candies in various shapes. The performances begin after the sun has fully set, and continue until the sun begins to rise again. In Meloria, the second day is a city holiday, and all workers are given a day off to recuperate from the night and to put on small performances of their own.   The wood elves practice a modified version, where the 2 days are celebrated around the new moon nearest to mid-summer (usually before if possible: was held from 26-27 Sune in 1015 PC), and involves demonstrations of skill in many areas, including smithing, tailoring, woodcarving, druidcrafting, and the usual performances.
