Wulvers

Culture:

"Once upon a time there was a goddess, Ephemora, who was as beautiful as the full moon in the night sky. She fell in love with a human man, and for a while they would meet at night in front of the moon and consummate their love for each other. This occurred for many months before one day, the goddess caught her lover sleeping with another, a human woman. She was enraged, and in her fury cursed the man she had once loved. Fur sprouted all over his body and his body contorted horribly, making his features sharper and more canine. The goddess swore that for all his days he and his progeny would be cursed to this mostly-beast part human life, and every full moon they gather to howl in frustration at she who made them this way."

This is the story Wulver mothers teach their children when they ask where wulvers come from. Their fathers are seldom present, often out in the wild gathering food and resources for his family. It is not infrequent for male wulvers to die to a wild beast or natural causes before reaching old age, leaving the mothers to raise their pups all alone. Thanks to this, women are honored and revered in wulver societies, for they show incredible strength in the face of not only surviving a harsh world but raising a family alone. Many wulver families come together so that other mothers can look after the pups while a select few hunt for food and the bare necessities.

History:

  Dirt Age:
When Ephemora bestowed sentience upon the wolves, there were still many who retained their animal form. They disappeared into the shadows, only to be spoken of in legend as mystical "talking wolves". The rest found themselves in a hostile world where supernatural forces constantly vied for supremacy, using whatever land and resources lay at their disposal. This left much to be desired for the life of a mortal, trying to survive another day. Ephemora abandoned the wulvers, who had no choice but to turn to a benevolent god called Xeroboros, which they believe to be the first wulver turned by her and thus gifted with some portion of her power. The wulvers continued to worship and pray to Xeroboros, rebuking the old ways and Ephemora. Their continued faith empowered Xeroboros and over generations he grew stronger and larger.
Leaf Age:
So much time has passed that the only generation that remembers the worship of Ephemora are the elders, with Xeroboros being an indisputable and awe-inspiring presence in many young pups' lives. With the elements finally silenced, many Vulfirin set out to claim an adventure for themselves. They explored as far as they could and experienced the various creatures and odd circumstances that resided in other lands and cultures. They became fast friends with the Contratta who shared their passion for the open road. After experiencing so much, they returned home to fulfill their role in the tribe and parent the next generation. Since this first wave of explorers, it has become something of tradition to set out on at least a small journey when becoming of age.
Flame Age:
Pets. That's what the humans call them. Obedient animals that rely on their brilliant masters. They were treated as slaves and idiotic companions to the humans in their construction of their everyday life. Pups were taken from their home before they were old enough to take their pilgrimage and forced into servitude. Some were even tortured and slaughtered by a few sick humans whose wickedness had overcome them. The rift between canine and human was irrevocably changed, and most wulvers find it difficult to trust that a human has good intentions for them.
