Gnomes
Origin: No one knows where they really came from, all they know is one day these grumpy little gremlins began to crawl out from the rocky crevices of the mountains by the hundreds. They were highly creative, imaginative people who quickly developed tools and started inventing newer and better things to help them survive in the mountains. Gnomes are known for their machinery and clever systems that support everyday life. They are constantly engaged with new projects as they prefer lots of hard work over any play.
During Human Invasion: Luckily, the mountains are a highly difficult terrain for humans, and thusly were not their target at any point in the invasions. Thankful for their safety, the king at the time, Cheshire Rotharin, opted to stay neutral in the face of the conflict, for the wellbeing of his people. Many of the citizens, although disagreeable certainly in personality, took issue with this neutrality, and were not okay with watching as the world burned around them. After watching the goliaths be torn down from the strong, noble people they were to laboring slaves, and then the same terror beginning to spread to the dwarves on the other side of The Two Rivers, a certain gnome had enough. Tibble Pebblebottom. He set out on his own and rescued a dwarven village during an ongoing human raid and guided them safely back to his home in the mountains. He petitioned his king the welcome the outsiders into their realm, to which the king begrudgingly accepted. As the humans continued their march, the dwarves and some few gnomes became restless about the goliaths' situation, having been fully enslaved by the humans for nearly the entire war. They forced the king to send some of his fighting men to aid in rescuing some of the slaves, and in the following conflict, many of those men were killed, but the retrieval of the goliaths was a success. Cheshire was very unhappy with his outcome, having to lose more of his people than the allies they wished to save seemed unfair to him. He started having his military arrest any who attempted to interfere with the human invasions after that point. Until sometime after humans started entering the mountains, threatening their safety once more. He was overthrown by his own son, Felix, who then rallied the people to defend themselves from the incoming danger. Through clever tactics and cooperation, they managed to avoid any humans having witnessed their location by the time they returned to Astorel.
Post Human Invasion: With Cheshire dethroned and Felix leading his people down a new path of friendship and righteousness, the gnomes moved forward into the new era with a new King and a new way of life. They built the dwarves tools with which to better excavate their homes out of the mountains, and invented new methods of agriculture for the goliaths that they still use today. They can be very friendly with other mountainfolk but seem bitter and hostile towards any other people, especially humans.
Current status: Although still unbearably grumpy, they are now close allies with the dwarves and goliaths who have taken up residence as their neighbors in Turtle's Spine. The goliaths provide them with comfortable clothing and fresh food while the dwarves assist them with trading their ideas and creations with other kingdoms around the world.
