Erekian Monarch

A monarch in Erekiath is either a king or a queen. The only difference between an Erekian king or queen is the gender. They carry the same responsibilities and have the same amount of influence.
They govern from the royal castle, in Haistone, abtly named, Castle Haistone.
A monarch in Erekiath is not like the typical king or queen. Where royalty in most monarchies are often important to the people, the commoners of Erekiath doesn't perceive the monarch as their direct ruler. They usually refer to either the The City Council or The Council of Elders when discussing leadership in their daily lives. Many commoners see the monarch as just another noble playing politics for power. The Erekian Nobility, on the other hand, regards the monarch with respect and see them as their ruler.

Qualifications

To become a monarch, one must have proven their combat skills, as well as their diplomatic and etiquette skills. Normally the candidates fulfill these requirements, as only knights or lords can be elected monarch.

Requirements

Only lords, and in rare cases knights, can be elected as a monarch by The Council of Elders. In theory, the council has the power to elect anyone as monarch, but that has never happened, and could potentially serve to undermine the entire educational structure of the Erekian Nobility.

Appointment

When an elected monarch dies or abdicates, it is the responsibility of the The Council of Elders to elect a new one. There is no hereditary structure within the Erekian Nobility, and only The Council of Elders can elect a monarch.
Once the council has chosen a monarch, they invite the entire Erekian Nobility to a coronation ceremony held in Castle Haistone. All lords and ladies are expected to attend the ceremony. The new monarch will then be bestowed with their new powers and responsibility. It is customary for the monarch to end the ceremony by giving an inspirational speech about the future of the country.
Although the capital of Erekiath is Aurora, the monarch resides in Haistone, since Haistone used to be the capital and has a suitable castle for a monarch. Additionally there is no castle in Aurora.
A monarch can choose to take a wife or husband and make them queen or king. These are also referred to as a non-elected monarch but acts as regnant just like the elected monarch. Usually the The Council of Elders must approve this, but they've never intervened before.
The non-elected monarch will have the same responsibilities and influence as the elected monarch, and must also be a knight or lord beforehand.
Most elected monarchs chose to find a king or queen, to have someone to share the burden of leadership with.
If the elected monarch dies or abdicates, the non-elected monarch will become a lord, regardless of their previous rank. It is not unheard of that The Council of Elders elects the former non-elected monarch to become the new monarch, especially if they were liked by the Erekian Nobility or maintained good standing with The Council of Elders.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the monarch is to govern the Erekian Nobility. This ranges from settling conflicts between nobles, to deciding which lord gets to govern what land. The monarch will also host knighting ceremonies and perform the knighting ritual.
All decisions made by The Council of Elders in regards to the nobility, is carried out through the monarch. The council can bypass the monarch if they wish, but that rarely happens, as this could lead to the nobility losing faith in the monarch, not just the person, but the concept of the position in general.
The monarch generally stays out of military affairs, but do have the power to take military decisions on behalf of The Order of Light. The monarch is also granted his own personal regiment of knights, mostly as a token force, but also to be able to handle conflicts between lords where disagreements have escalated to armed conflict, although this happens rarely, as he consequences for taking up arms against a fellow lord are quite severe. The punishment ranges from the loss of lands and titles to being sentenced to death, the latter being quite rare, as it does not adhere to the teachings of The Light.

Benefits

Part of governing the Erekian Nobility also entails managing taxes. The monarch taxes the lords, who in turn are responsible for collecting taxes in their own lands.
While most of the tax income goes directly to the Temple of Light the monarch is allowed to keep a portion for themself. Although it is expected the monarch uses the funds in the best interest of Erekiath, he is allowed to do with them as he pleases, without interference from The Council of Elders.

Accoutrements & Equipment

A monarch is given a crown upon their coronation. The crown is uniquely designed for the monarch and a great deal of effort is put into the crown, as it is important that it fits the monarch, and substantiates their perceived personality.
When a monarch dies, their crown will be put on display in The Hall of Monarchs inside Castle Haistone.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Only the The Council of Elders can force a monarch to abdicate. This has never happened before, but it could be done if the council is unhappy with the monarch.
If the Erekian Nobility is dissatisfied with the monarch, they can request that The Council of Elders forces the monarch to abdicate. It is still up to the council to decide on the matter.
If a monarch wishes to abdicate, they can request permission to do so from The Council of Elders. If the council refuses the request, there is no way out of the position for the monarch, short of dying.
